Mobil 1 5W-30 (my preference) or any Dexos approved 5W-30. With that said, GM recently gave approval to use Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP (currently being used to fill 2019s from the factory), but it is difficult to find. You can't go wrong with the good ol' Mobil 1 5W-30 plus there's an active rebate available on Mobil 1's website that ends May 31st, if I'm not mistaken.

Viscosity Grade
Use SAE 5W-30 viscosity grade
engine oil.
Cold Temperature Operation: In an
area of extreme cold, where the
temperature falls below −29 °C
(−20 °F), an SAE 0W-30 oil may be
used. An oil of this viscosity grade
will provide easier cold starting for
the engine at extremely low
temperatures. When selecting an oil
of the appropriate viscosity grade, it
is recommended to select an oil of
the correct specification. See
“Specification” earlier in this section.
For track events or competitive
driving, use Mobil 1 15W-50 engine
oil.

I've been using Walmart's SUPERTECH conventional oil in my 1971 Datsun 240Z for close to 10 years. 279k miles and going strong. Walmart does not make oil, and it meets API standards.

I also believe their full synthetic 5/30 is Dexos approved.

Check Bob is the Oil Guy forums for more. The analysis there shows they are good oils.

Motor oil in a car such as a C7 isn't an area to go "cheap' IMO. Besides, like you say, it's the wrong viscosity.

Use what the engineers that designed the cars suggest- Mobil 1 0W40 Dexos approved Gen 2 ESP.

You realize if you run Mobil 1 exactly as the factory specs, this motor could run 400,000 miles? That's a full 100,000 miles further than if you use cheap oil.

Or put another way, with cheap oil you'll only make it 300,000 miles between rebuilds! I hope nothing else goes wrong in that time.

Even if he chooses to run that oil, and it is high quality, it does not meet the viscosity requirements.

That said, as much as these cars cost, I will use exactly what they recommend.

Do you see Dexos on the label?

Neither do I.

AFAIK, the Dexos version of it is not on the shelves in auto parts stores YET.

I would use what the owner's manual suggests. I have always run Mobil 1 in my Vettes and have no complaints.

I never suggested he use the incorrect weight oil. I stated only that SUPERTECH (Walmart "Brand") does offer a 5/30 synthetic that is DEXOS certified and would be acceptable (as long as 5/30 was STILL the recommended weight, which apparently it no longer is since they now specify 0/40).

I see that supertech is dexos certified, but how much money do you save, $5 ? My Walmart sells 5 quarts jugs of Mobil 1 5w30 for like $23 bucks.

Hmm, I pay less for dexos certified Mobil 1 5W-30 full synthetic, also from Walmart!

Been buying for every oil change in my 2014 C7 and now twice for my Grand Sport. Just paid $23.00 each for two 5 quart jugs at Walmart. Then as I have for all other changes got two $12 rebates from Mobil. Thta's $11/5 quart jug after rebate. Note 2 rebates allowed/person.

Just checked and the SUPERTECH 5-30 "full synthetic" is $17.47! That's a 59% Premium!

SIDE BAR:
Funny, I started using Mobil 1 in 1974 when it was a "true synthetic molecule" because the Datsun area Service Rep recommended it to replace the dashpot oil in the large Hitachi SU carbs in my 260Z.! That was a year that car companies were struggling to meet EPA pollution regulations. There was hot water going to the 260Z intake manifold, an air pump injecting in the exhaust manifold and running lean mixtures. (The Vettes that year suffered as well- the 350 cid engines had 195 hp and the 427 cid MAX 270 hp!)

The Datsun service rep called the problem I had "porpoising!" When warm and accelerating, the car would slow then surge and repeat 2 to 3 times. The Hitachi internal piston that controlled the variable area venturi was oscillating and the dashpot oil tinning out when warm not controlling it's movement as designed. The Mobil 1 solved the problem! I subsequently eliminated the hot water in the manifold, installed headers eliminating the exhaust air pump and put in richer jet needles! Car ran much better!

After reading about the temperature range benefits of the Mobil 1 I installed it in my modified Corvair where the oil, when driving aggressively, was operating at ~325 F. It formed a scum in the oil fill tube despite my adding an aluminum pad with fins outside and pin fins inside as well as fined aluminum valve covers. Mobil 1 solved that problem as well.

Have been using it every since even after they and others changed the product to a "more refined "Dino oil" in ~2000. That is when Mobil lost the lawsuit to Castrol who was calling a more highly refined "Dino oil" synthetic! Mobil and others were forced to do the same as it cost about half of their man made molecule prior product!

No where did I say you suggested he used the wrong viscosity. The oil he posted is what we were talking about. He posted a two bottles with the 0W-20 which is wrong. And that is what I was pointing out.

5W-30 is still recommend for C-7 up through and including 2018. They can use the now 0W-40 if they want, and its recommended for the 2019.

Default Really?

How many folks can't go to Wal Mart and take a bottle of semi well known mfg's synthetic oil off the shelf? If you are one that can, you've answered the 'what works' question.

Oil is like bringing politics into a discussion. I wouldn't use that oil either but THEY say it's just as good as the name brands we buy...your choice either way just use the right weight.

^^^

Hmm, even if it's as good! It costs 59% more than Mobil 1 full synthetic, dexos approved 5W-30 with the rebate Mobil runs twice a year!

$17.47/5 quarts = $3.49/quart vs the $2.20/quart I just paid after the Mobil 1 rebate! Same Walmart, same oil shelf! No longer have to send in anything, just scan your purchase receipt and attach to the website page where you apply!

. . . and "Dexos-approved" for warranty purposes. GM wants certain additives and characteristics in the oil that Dexos certification ensures. Using the approved weight only does not meet GM's requirement. There are plenty of other Dexos-approved oils besides Mobil 1.
