Default Bad Battery?

Got a 2014 Stingray and, when not driving it, have it charging on a Mod. No. 1510 BatteryMinder Plus. Have had the charger for at least a year. It has 3 modes of indicators: Connection, Desulfating, Charging.

Normally, the Connection is steady green, the Desulfating is flashing blue, and the Charging is steady green, which means it has reached full charge.

For the last month, the charger has been showing steady green Connection, with flashing blue Desulfating, and flashing green Charging, BUT, every minute or so, it goes flashing red Connection for a while, then back to previous -- steady green Connection, flashing blue Defulfating, and flashing green Charging.

So, I look in the BatteryMinder manual, and it says the flashing red Connection indicates a shorted cell. Just to be sure it isn't something in the car causing this problem, I disconnect the negative terminal and get the same indicators. Must be battery. Took the battery out of the car, and for grins hooked up the charger, and it went to the normal indicators which says the battery is fine.

What the heck happened? Could I have broke loose the shorted cell? Just for information, before I took it out of the car and after letting the battery sit for 2 days, it reads 12.7 Volts.

Battery is original.

Blame the minder. There are 35 complaints on amazon dot com bout the 1510 and 1500. I have the original models, red and green lights only, and they haven't done nasties to my cars since 2005, or broke down. I DID have to replace the 2007 Z06 original battery in 2014 after keeping it on the minder full time (2300 miles only on the car.) Maybe it boiled all the water out after seven years, I never checked that. Even after I drove over one minder with my Tundra after placing it on top of the tire (truck was outside and the top of the tire didn't get wet in rain) and it looked like Hello Pete, I fixed the wires and it kept ticking. I bought one of the more expensive battery minders, double cords and lights for multiple charging, as a gift for my brother and it broke in less than a year. Now they are calling the desulphation claims snake oil. But all great cars (Porsche and Corvette) come with them now or as options) Pity, when I bought my 2005 and both 2007 vettes, they were dead as a doornail on the showroom floor, and I got the dealer to install new batteries before I drove off. Now the dealers know to keep the batteries charged frequently, so my 2017 built in 11/2016 had a year and a half old battery when I bought it in March 2018. minder on, green light blinking.

bad minders bad minders

If it was me I would replace the 4 year old battery before I do anything else!

Yep. I would suspect the battery before the charger. You are pushing your luck on ANY battery that is over four years old.

Original battery, so off to get a new one tomorrow. See how that works with my current charger, and get a Deltran if it misbehaves. Thanks for the help.

Thought I'd close the loop on battery vs. charger problem. I replaced the old battery with AC Delco 42 month Gold and hooked up charger (Battery Minder 1510). It showed shorted cell again. I have another 1510 which showed the same thing as the other before battery replacement, so hooked it up. Same thing. Ordered the CTEK MXS 5.0, hooked it up, and within a few hours, all lights were proper (8 of them!).

SO, 1510 (both of them) had failed, so they suck. I really like the CTEK. It also has a lot more amps than the 1510. Pretty expensive though -- guess you get what you pay for.
