Default Tires for 2017 Vette

Thinking of a 2017 Corvette. I am not going to take car on racetrack. What is recommended standard Stingray LT 1-LT3?

What about all this discussion about tires?

I got 32,000 miles on OEM Michelin tires and just replaced them with OEM Michelins. I could have gotten more out of my last set of tires, but it’s rainy season in Florida. Personally, I like the Michelins and have no complaints.

WOW that seems pretty good. I am sitting at 15k and starting to look at mine now, not a DD, but our roads here are terrible. The OEM tires are good though.

Hmm, don't say where you live BUT all that discussion you refer mostly is folks who want to drive when it's below 35 degrees and want all-season tires. Others may be trying to save a few dollars but IMO foolish! GM and Michelin spent a lot of time and money developing those tires for the C7! Michelin took the business away from Goodyear who had it for years!

Despite the tires being the same width as my C6 Z51 and the LT1 having more hp and significantly more low end torque with it's variable cam timing-the tires did fine on my 2014. Still traction limited so the wider tires on the Grand Sport are better. However you can't fit those wide tires so just buy what you have, unless as I noted you need all-season tires!

If you don’t plan on track driving you won’t need Z-51 option or Z06 or Grand Sport models, unless you just love the look or want to spend more money on sticker and insurance. 1, 2 or 3LT is all about options like front cameras, heated/cooled seats, heads up display, etc. That all depends on what you want.

Tires...if you live where winters are cold and snowy, you want to get a set of all season tires if you plan on driving when it’s colder than 30 degrees. The cars’ original equipment is the Michelin PSS runflat tire. It is not advised for use in cold weather. Some on the forum say they don’t have any issues once the tires get warm. I bought a set of all season tires and change them at Halloween.

Even with the tire choices it’s a great car...both out of the box or modified. Good luck with you decision and ultimately your purchase. I’m about two years in and have zero regrets, hope you’ll be able to say the same.

For Michelin all season AS 3+ users: do you notice fewer rocks being picked up and thrown by the AS3+ tires, since they have a less sticky tread compound?

Most definitely, the AS3+ do not hurl stones nearly as much as the stickier PSS does when hot. The difference is dramatic.

I have both sets and live on a gravel road, so I have earned the equivalent of a PhD in this topic. I run the AS3+ set during the colder 6 months of the year, and the PSS during the warm season. On the days I do the changeover, I can immediately hear the flying stones on the PSS, vs. silence on the AS3+.

How do the AS3+ perform vis-a-vis the stock PSS? IIRC you mentioned some time ago that they were much better in cold but a bit less grippy in hot weather. Also, equal noise and ride qualities. When I'm due I may buy the AS3+ if they introduce them in GS/Z06 sizes, but mostly for durability rather than for rock or temperature issues. Mine rarely gets driven in <45° down here.

I suspect 99% of owners would never notice the difference in street use even in warm weather. I don't, because you have to go near the edge of the envelope to see the difference, which is dangerous on the street. What I believe I've said previously on this forum is that the PSS would, no doubt, have an edge on the track.

I'm sticking with the OEM MIchelin's when the time comes. Great tires for a non-Z51 car IMHO.

How often does the mercury drop below 30 down there?

Seldom when I need to drive (other than the wife's SUV!) However this was a cold winter and i had an early meeting in town (~17 miles) and the wife needed her SUV! It was 24 F when I left the house. As I do when it's <45 F I put in Weather mode and all was fine. When the engine was warm I approached a red traffic light with no other cars. Hit the brakes aggressively to see how it would stop-it was fine no ABS!

When I returned it was still under 30F and I made a turn, again with no traffic so I gave it more like summer throttle and sure enough the nannies caught it and although the rear stepped out slightly it was very stable. Next time it's below 35 will still use the wife's SUV, if I can but know I can drive the Vette -if very careful!

If I had to drive often when it was below 45 F i would get another set of wheels and buy tires resigned for those temps. Did that for years when I lived "Up North" 35 years ago!

Took delivery in September, by Thanksgiving I had AS3+ on my C7. I swap back in April/May...the system has worked so far 28k miles of no incident driving and counting.
