I took the front plate off the car I purchased used and one of the screws from the holder has made a deep puncture into the paint. This seems deeper than a chip and there seems to be some paint mounded around the hole. Any ideas on the best way to repair other than the expense of a body shop?

DANG!!! If you can repeat it here, what did you say when you saw that?
A few different techniques can be applied, however, I would gradually build-up puncture/indentation with paint, wet sand top coat (2000-2500), polish, and buff. It looks like the edges are lifted. If so, you may want to cut/sand them down flush, but this might expose the composite material, which will make the touch-up more noticeable. GL.
I have had good luck with the Lanka system on some deep chips. At least it's easy to try and does not make anything worse. It will not address the raised edges like sanding would, but can do pretty impressive things to chips.

I bought the car from a BMW dealer in Palm Springs. When I picked it up I asked if they would remove the front plate for me and they claimed they had to sell it with the plate on and could not remove it. I don't know if they were aware of the damage or not. When I roved the bracket I was shocked and actually considered putting it back on.
No half *** attempt or any amount of "makeup" is gonna fix it to your liking. Put the plate back on until you have a ton more chips, have it sprayed and then have PPF applied. Or have it sprayed now if it bothers you.
Had that on my C6 but just run Marks.
I never had that car painted but every time someone pointed it out it bothered me.
these cars are about enjoyment NOT aggravation. If it aggravates you and cant resolve quickly move on. It's worked for me in the past and luckily each vehicle gets nicer and enjoyment factor goes up.
will always have to deal with some bs but this one is easily remedied. Good luck.
