It is usually difficult to replicate published times. The magazines generate these times with pro drivers and under ideal conditions, and they often correct for environmental conditions.
I agree with the OP. Very difficult to get those 3.7-3.8 numbers. I got a 3.9 ONCE and I think that was a fluke. Usually 4.2 to 4.4, pretty much just what you are getting. A couple guys have shown some 3.6-3.7 PDR's and dash timer pictures. The question is PURE STOCK ???
Also, the manufacturer has unlimited resources to get those numbers. My guess a development engineer figures out weight, HP, air density etc. and says; "the car should go 3.7, take a couple of those mule cars out to Milford and run them till you get a legitimate 3.7/3.8 out of one of them. Again tires, time and track are unlimited resources, something we as the consumer don't have.
I have gotten a best of 3.9 with mine, but I find it super easy to consistently get 4.0 to 4.1 with my car, even in the heat of summer. Mine is a base model with the 2.41 gears/A8, so I simply leave it in drive, leave all the nannies in place, and mash the pedal to the floor. I haven't tried launch control at all but I doubt it would make the times any better, as I only get a hint of wheelspin with my current launch method. I think that with cooler weather I can probably get it down around 3.7 or 3.8, as long as the added power from the cooler weather doesn't cause too much wheelspin to hurt the times. So far I've always had 3/4 of a tank to a full tank of gas when I've tested 0-60 as well.
no wheel spin I expect that would be issue in sport 1 or 2 when in track mode

I bolded the part in question because I'm not sure if the engine power is reduced in dry mode under PTM as part of traction control? I recall reading SOMEWHERE that launch control is only available in TRACK mode in PTM?
If I may postulate, you're getting 4.4 second because the traction management system does not release the full 460 hounds available to you?
The published #s are at sea level in cold weather and perfect road conditions. I expect they have a pro driver spending a week and he finally gets a sub 4 number after 100 runs and 6 sets of tires but it makes it onto the marketing material

I got my 3.9 second 0-60 on just my third attempt playing with the meter, on an 84 degree day, 3/4 of a tank of 93 octane gas, 100% stock 1LT Stingray (and I don't even have the performance exhaust so I'm at only 455 hp). I'm at about 600ft above sea level. My very first run was a 4.2, second was a 4.0. Launching with the A8 is super easy.
Also, guys if you are using PDR (I think same goes for the timer) for your numbers it does not include rollout like all magazine publications and manufacturers claims. Rollout alone is worth a tenth of two.

had some free time yesterday and wanted to exercise the gs a8- Track mode - double press set to dry
did one run using the dash timer with launch control 4.4
did another without launch 4.4
hmmm how do we get those sub 4 numbers?
2017 GS stock A8 with Range disabler. Only did launch control a few times in low 4's but last one was 3.8 and I left it on the DIC. Sport 1 set up and no drama on launch, it just goes!
Did you do a burn out first. Found on U-tube how to do a burn out without a line lock. Pretty neat
No burn out. The issue with the A8 is that you really have to stand on the breaks to keep the car from creeping and turning the rear wheels prior to launch. I would bet the clock starts before you think you are launching because of creep. Did this after a 20 mile drive so tires were not cold.
