Default Disabling AFM

What is the reason many C7 owner disable the AFM? Just recently purchased a 2015 Z51 with 13000 miles, and was trying to figure out if this is something I need to do.

Just bear in mind that you will say bye-bye to any powertrain warranty by doing so

There are a few reasons:
  1. Many people find the four-cylinder sound annoying if their vehicle is equipped with a louder aftermarket exhaust.
  2. Some drivers want V8 power under their foot at all times.
  3. AFM lifters have a history of failing and oil consumption can be a problem.

but more importantly, folks are experiencing torque converter issues when paired with the A8.

I highly recommend the Range Disabler. I started using it when I had about 37,000 miles on mine as a precaution. I never have had any drive train issues, but not taking any chances. I have a little over 75,000 on the car now. I never really noticed any difference in gas mileage. We're on the road most of the time and I was getting (city and highway) 25.9 per gallon and am getting the same mileage with the Range. And with the new Range Disabler you can leave it inserted all the time without fear of battery drain. Initially when that product was first introduced you would have to unplug it if you were not going to use the car for more than a few days. Not so now.
And buy it from the company that manufactures it. You'll have the latest firmware.

I agree with everthing above. I plugged mine in before I left the dealer to insure no issues with my A8 or valvetrain.

Did I read somewhere on the forum that you can avoid AFM by NOT driving in ECO mode?

If U have a M7 stick that is correct but not so with A8, it will go into V4 mode unless U are in M mode and use paddles.

Plug this into your OBD port and you’ll have a full-time V8. Works great...

I'm not a fan of plug in bullshit. Get it tuned. Only costs 2 HP Tuners credits ($100). Plus while they have your car you can get your transmission tuned so it bang shifts earlier (another 2 credits which also unlocks the ECU that controls throttle response so you can get that programmed to 1:1). And if you want to get the car properly tuned later you already have the proper ECUs unlocked so it's just dyno time after that.

Mine feels like a completely different car with the Range. Runs, and shifts much smoother. Like Joe, I haven't noticed much difference in the mpg's. And, the Range will not void your warranty like an engine tune.
