They suggest that you are passing other sports cars at a high rate of speed!!! They just mean it's getting closer and closer to redline, shift at yellow then you might shift right at redline, and if you are really fast shift at red, if slow shift at green.
The shift lights only come into play in the track display in the higher rev ranges.I never noticed what RPMs triggers the shift lights and won't be going there till the spring.
If you don't normally rev past 4000 rpms or so, you may never see shift lights.

This is simply not true. Above is a video of the shift lights while in Sport mode. Mine shows the shift lights in sport mode.
In your Track display, vital stats numbers are displayed. In my 17 GS, the numbers are not displayed - only the bars, which make it difficult to know the exact numbers. Is there any way to upgrade 17' display to show the numbers?

Shift lights are display-dependent, not mode-dependent. I have my HUD and dash display selected in Track mode all the time. I DD my C7 and generally keep it in Tour because of crappy roads. Even though I'm in Tour most of the time, the shift lights are there on the Track display.
I use this display all the time, because it has every bit of info one might want on a single display. However, it only became available in MY18.
Can a MY17 be upgraded by the dealer for this display format?

No, even though the C7 is a rolling computer, there are no firmware updates available. Chevrolet is following the Apple model. Buy a new car if you want the latest OS.

While I have tried this display in a new C7, I find it too busy. Also, when the RPMs are pretty low, it’s hard to see what they are at a quick glance (unlike the sport mode display). If tracking the car, the RPMs would be in the more visible range. For me, I like sport mode on dash and track display on HUD. Plus I like to see the audio info on the DIC when using the nav system display for other things :-).
