I think the color of the car has as much to do with what color wheels look best. This is also subject to personal preference. I think black wheels look best on Yellow, orange, silver and white cars. I have a Torch Red car and much prefer the std painted silver wheels. I really don't like chrome wheels on any of the cars because I feel they look dated. I have a lot of black accents on my car including hood stinger stripe, side skirts, front splitter and Z51 rear spoiler all in carbon flash. Black wheels in my opinion would be just too much black and the silver looks great with the red.
This is all personal opinion and honestly I'm glad so many are going with black rims because it just makes my silver painted ones look more unique.
I posted a few weeks back about my black rims vs my chrome rims - I have both sets. Now Ill let you decide which you think looks better. Overall, it seems the younger aged owners prefer the black, and the older aged owners prefer chrome. I just think the black rims "hide" the tires and doesn't allow any contrast... To me, I think it depends on the exterior color:
White, Yellow, Orange (the brighter colors) - Black Rims look best
Grey, Red, Black, Blue, Green (the darker colors) - Chrome rims look best

its always interesting to see different tastes. I look at the two pics and the top is almost exactly the car I have now. I see those black wheels and now hate my chromies even more 😂
It really is a personal thing. That and I hate that the OEM chrome is falling off already

I generally agree with your brighter colors/darker colors summary. However, not all Blues (or Greens) are "darker colors". For example, my Laguna Blue is a brighter color (at least to me).

Yes, LB is brighter (than AB) and can look good with either choice. LRGM doesn't look look with black rims, IMO. I'm glad mine are chrome. Black on black (Murdered) still looks badass.
But..... If I were ever to put black wheels on a car ( I wanted to do it to my Z06, just never did), then a body-colored rim stripe is the way to to it.
I had mixed feelings about the black wheels when I bought this car. But they grew on me, and I like that they allow the red calipers to really accentuate the look of the car.
I went with Black wheels when I bought my '17 BRM Grand Sport. I was going for the "Blackout" look. All of the wheel detail just got lost, what with the Black Calipers, Wheels and Tires. I recently had the OEM Black wheels machine faced. I really like the way it came out. You can see the wheel detail, and there is much more contrast with the calipers and tires. I know some will not like it, but it works for me!
Before After
Where did you have your wheels machine faced? Good idea!
IMO black wheels lose the detail of the spokes and structure, and gunmetal wheels are more appealing to me ... Chrome or silver complement a silver paint job.
I have the chrome wheels. Since I wanted a black/black GS, I bought mine from stock at Kerbeck, but I also was fairly firm that I wanted black wheels. At the time, they had a number of black GS in stock, but the only one with the other options I wanted had chrome. When I saw them in the sunlight, I decided to go with the chrome. But in a perfect world I would switch back and forth.
With arctic white they create a striking contrast along with the black trim. It makes the paint pop. With a black car it creates a somewhat menacing look.
Which is exactly why I ordered my 14 Stringray, Z51, 3LT car with black wheels, goes so well with Arctic white, when you have the CF roof, the black mirrors, spoiler and hood stinger.
I think On the light cars, like Arctic White, Yellow, this years Orange the black wheels look better. Black or dark cars look better with Chrome.
My Ceramic Matrix Gray I feel back is the better choice.
Chrome if you’re in AARP or if the car color is lighter or equal to plum rose.
Black wheels for everybody else
I think this is the answer. Maybe the average age has been going lower, and not a shift in trend. I have black rims, and my grandfather always has chrome + kalahari interior on his cars.
My Son told me I should have got black rims. I told him that when he gets his Vette he can order it any way he wants including getting black rims. I had black rims once on my Cadillac and I didn't like the look. Maybe that's because I'm a Grandpa? Then again I don't like chrome either.
