Default Open Lug Nuts

Planning to order some new lug nuts and thinking about going with the open ended type. But first, wondering if anyone has had any issues with the bolts rusting.

I noticed all the Spring Mt. school cars have been equipped with open lug nuts. I'm sure that's because they're changing tires so often with impact wrenches.

The rust part seems like a minor issue to me. If it happened you could just hit them with Rustoleum Rust Reformer, which produces a satin black finish, and works incredibly well to keep it away.

If you changed tires as often as the driving schools do you wouldn't need to worry about rust. But if you only remove the lug nuts once a year, then yes, rust would definitely be an issue. Lubricating or coating the threads of a fastener requiring torque is never a good idea - it will not stay tight and the chances are good for over-torquing which can "stretch" the threaded steel and lead to premature failure.

I was looking at the Katech open ended titanium lugs (16g ea), but I may have to reconsider.

Katech is asking $6.99 each for titanium lugs. They are awesome.

I would get the black ones at $10.99/ea.

I don't recommend it. They will rust and you do not want to be hassling with removing or concealing the rust. Once it starts its a bear to get rid of or stay on top of it. Rust Never Sleeps! (Thanks Neil).

Doesn't like like the potential hassle. I will look for some closed end Ti lugs.

In my search, I came across these interesting lugs: https://www.thelugnutsource.com/coll...nt=21994472451

On my previous car I had some Sickspeed nuts that were open ended but came with little screw on caps that closed them if desired - this gives you the best of both styles. Cap color can be different from lug color so you can mix and match. For example black AND chrome! If you decide to keep the caps on for extended trips put some blue thread lock on them... I lost one and noticed others getting lose. Thankfully they sell replacements caps just in case.

I was considering these too: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...-lugs-pia.html

I still haven't done it. I don't really like the idea of having to use anti-seize and guessing on the proper torque for such a critical joint. But if I could find some nicer flat black closed ones, maybe.

I am also considering Project Kics R40 Iconix, which are open ended and have a threaded cap to close them off. I like the floating tapered ring to prevent damage to the wheels. But in reality, no one sees that part of the wheel when it's mounted...soooo, maybe not that practical.

https://www.vividracing.com/kics-r40...150942349.html

And pretty pricey for not being titanium.

There's these closed titanium nuts, but they're not black and they're expensive.

And just found these (still not black):

The ends of the studs are coated, no rust issues.

Just go out and remove 1 lug nut, look at the end of the stud with a flash light, there is a blueish color on the unthreaded part of the stud.

More than likely, that spot of color on the end of the lug is a manufacturer's mark and has nothing to do with rust inhibition.

What was wrong with the factory chrome plated closed end lug nuts? They appear to have a good quality chrome plating on them. Or is the Ti just add a cool factor?

The ones from Tikore are cool. The red vette in the picture showcasing the lugnuts had the Corvette emblem on them. That is cool. But the ones shown with the ones you actually add to your cart to purchase do not. $600 might be worth it with the emblem and the Ti material but their are definitely cheaper options as you have indicated without the emblem.

Nothing wrong with them, per se. I want Ti lugs for weight savings (the difference may seem marginal, but unsprung weight is unsprung weight) and I want them to be black because my wheels are gunmetal. I have no other chrome on the car, so chrome lug nuts just wouldn't look right IMO.

Those are nice looking. Will consider, thanks for the link!
