Rev match or no Rev match M7
#61
If the SRT is surging on downshifts I think something may not be working properly, it shouldn't do that. The entire point of the Corvette's Rev Match on downshifts is to match the engine rpm to wheel speed so the shift is as smooth as possible. Smooth shifts are most important when on track and driving at the limits of the car. A rough shift at the limits of traction could upset the car and cause you to go off track.

Does the SRT have an auto tranny with an option to go into manual mode? If so, the rev match discussion in this thread doesn't apply to the SRT - rev match feature is only available on M7 tranny. BTW yes, car surge on downshift in manual mode of A8 is common. This is pretty much the only annoyance of the A8 for me.

Love Rev Match as it gets it perfect all the time. I make many more shifts in normal driving then when "driving in anger!" I often make that 5th to 3rd and what the OP stated 7th to 4th when on the interstate for an exit ramp OR just getting past and 18 wheeler quickly. I just pull back on the shift lever with no side pressure and am in direct drive 4th. Then back directly to 7th.
Best thing since synchromesh, IMO!
There are a few tricks and things I had to stop. 1st, you must be careful where you put the shift lever. For example if downshifting from 5th to 3rd and you inadvertently go a little to far to the left while still in the neutral gate it assumes you want 2nd and will over rev! I had to stop doing something I did in the past when skipping a gear. With the clutch depressed I would put the lever in the gear I was skipping (spools up the cluster gear giving the synchros a help.) Can't do that as it confuses the computer. Just go directly to the desired lower gear. The Tremic has triple synchros in most gears, one carbon faced. They will match the speeds perfectly without your help!

On the track, it's rev match for me. There's a lot going on and not much time for thinking about learning heel to toe method. If you've never learned it, then it's a no-brainer. If you've already learned it, it might be hard to change.

As I do with many questions, think of an extreme. If in 5th say at 50 mph (~1500 rpm) and shift to 2nd you'd be at 4500 rpm and slow down very fast!

I still like the pleasure of a perfectly executed throttle blip during a downshift on the road. At an x-cross or on the track, it's hard not to use it. Allows you to focus on other more important things.

Finally drove the car for some decent amount with the rev match on and I was pleased with the downshifts as I could hear the exhaust when the engine was revving to match the rpm, me likey

[QUOTE=rrepp;1599094994]I do have fond memories of the dewey decimal system. And as a child I liked the sound the rotary dial made when returning to its place.[/QUOTE
i bet you also like the sound of a Rainbird tick, tick, tick, tick sprinkler head instead of those new-fangled silent gear driven ones.....

That's funny . . . how did you know? I was rough on that thing -- bent the shifter mechanism and had to limp to dealer in 1st gear -- that was a long drive. Boy was my Mom pissed.

I would not give up my M7 for any auto transmission including a PDK.

When I leave the garage, the Rev Match is turned on. I hated heel/toe shifting and searching for the correct revs to match a downshift. So much so that my C5 was an A4. I was set to buy an A6 or A8 C7 when a sales guy asked me to test a M7. By the time that test drive was over, the M7 was very much in my search criteria and the automatic transmissions were in second place.

Agree, never drive without it on, cannot rev match better than the computer does it, guess I am just lazy (but not lazy enough to want an auto).
