I just got a email pushing a Nav map upgrade for $100. I'm wondering about the following sentence in the email:
This new map update helps you stay on top of addresses, roads and points of interest that may have changed. Update now for $99.99* — before supplies run out.
How do they run out of an electronic upload? That really isn't possible, so it must be a lie.
My experience with both GM and Ford nav "upgrades" has been poor. They are WAAAY overpriced, and their "updates" often don't include major features that are over a year old... In this case, I wouldn't be surprised to see the next "edition" come out shortly and they're trying to clear the shelves of old stock.
I have chosen to upgrade my nav systems only every three - four years...
I just ordered the upgrade. I don't think the previous owner ever upgraded it as my house (built in 2015) is not on the current set. It was worth the $100 to see how many of the new roads in my area will populate. I have also heard the entire system boots faster with the upgrade.
This will probably be the only time I do upgrade it though. Over next winter I want to install a front camera and with that module I will carplay capability. I much prefer using maps over the factory system in any car from any manf.

I purchased the updates last December and installed them in January. Yes, they come on a USB stick and are keyed to your car’s VIN. Not hard to do at all. My car is a ‘14 and I do not think the maps were ever updated.
V.2019 is the current version, V.2020 will likely come out in September '19. I upgraded my 2014 to V.2017 and now V.2019 and both times noticed improvements and updates. I'll likely continue doing mine every 2-3 years. The $99 sale runs through June 30th.
They tell you to sit in park with the car running for 50 minutes. Seems like in other threads guys said they drove during the update w/o a problem.
Some people drive and I believe once you are into the update a message comes up saying you can drive. If I remember correctly it doesn't really take all that long.
I'd like to get my hands on one of these USB sticks for research purposes. I'll give $20 to someone to send me the used USB (provided it isn't blank) once they've successfully loaded the maps on their car. Yes, I know it's coded per VIN, and won't work on my car. I'd still like to have a look at one. I'll even take an older one so long as it's compatible with 2016 and up. PM me if interested.
You pay $100 to be up-to-date today and be out-of-date tomorrow. Not worth it.
Updates should be free. If waze and maps can be updated for free, so can this.
I ordered it mainly because the Apple Carplay is not reliable in my Vette. I very much like using Apple maps as well as the other apps, I like how it syncs with my calendar and loads in my destination when I fire it up. But on multiple occasions it crapped out on me en route. I know its not the iPhone (XR) or the cable (Apple certified cable) because I have the same cable in my Kia Sportage which I use Apple Carplay all the time (the Kia has no nav), never ever had it crash in the Kia. I even tried swapping cables. So in the Vette I use the Chevy nav. I get the traffic updates too so it is pretty reliable.
