Default Only the outer exhaust tips turn black. Why?

I noticed on my Vette, and I assume this is the case for everyone? Only the outer exhaust tips get the black carbon buildup.

Why is this?

You're running with the flaps open all the time.

Go in to exhaust settings and put it in ECO. It will keep the valves closed most of the time. It also quiets the car down quite a bit.

I drive in sport mode for the sound and notice the same thing. Whatever the reason is for the tips to be dirty, I just take a minute to wipe the tips with a wet microfiber cloth after every couple of drives and they stay clean.

The outer tips have less muffling/restriction than the inner tips.

This is what I do too. Quick, easy way to keep the exhaust tips looking good.

It is because only the outer tips are actually connected directly to the exhaust piping. Check this thread out it shows you a couple pictures of the inside of an NPP muffler.

I have a question. For the first time ever I drove about 300 miles 1 day and my tips didn't get dirty AT ALL!!! Even the outer ones. Why is that? Seems weird, is something wrong going on? Everything seems to be Was in sport mode the whole time

BTW, I've got non-NPP exhaust, and on it all four tips darken evenly. You've got NPP, I assume.

Yep, I got tired of only two tips getting quite dirty rather quickly, so I fixed that by painting them flat black.

No NPP here and I still painted mine flat-black.
