Playing music through USB. What am I doing wrong?
#21
I'm pretty old too. I had my wife help me get all of my music onto my iPhone and now i just use my phone to play my music. And it's, for me at least, very easy to navigate to whatever I want to play. Just plug the phone into the car when I enter and I'm good. And if I need navigation it's really easy to use as well!

As others have noted FAT32 should work fine as should NTFS formatted memory. I have had to reformat exFAT memory for friends to fix. I am running 64gb low profile NTFS mem with no issue on my 2019. Also as noted above, the mp3s do not have to be under root directory but can be at least 2 file folder levels down. My music is filed under root by artist, then album and works flawless. As noted, Windows 10 cannit firmat as FAT32, but you can get freeware utilities to do FAT32. I would try NTFS first and that should work.

256GB thumb drive USB 3.0 purchased at Best Buy, formatted to NFTS with Windows 10 (had to format it when I bought it). Over 3000 songs on it. Works perfectly in my 2019. The first time I plugged the drive in the car (USB port behind the screen), it did take a couple of minutes or so to load everything before I could browse every song. After that, no issues.

Thank you all for your posts. I purchased a Samsung 128-GB USB 3.1 flash drive. Using Windows 7, I reformatted the USB drive to NTFS. I copied and pasted all of my MP3 folders onto the root location of the USB drive. My music is organized by artist, then album: one folder per artist, then one folder per album beneath that artist. I plugged the USB drive into the USB slot behind the hidden compartment of my 2019 Z06. I selected Media. It took a few minutes to create the music tree. There was a rotating symbol in the upper right of the screen indicating that the computer was reading the contents of the USB drive and populating the tree. As that happened, more music appeared in the browse tree. Basically, I just followed the instructions in this thread.

Be aware that Macs put invisible files on the USB drive which can cause problems. One has to delete them for the USB to work.

Playlists can cause an issue. If a playlist is corrupted or formatted incorrectly the whole indexing operation fails and you can't browse by playlist or folder or artist. The medial always started at the first title in Songs.
Luckily I found an old thread that mentioned the indexing issue. I deleted all playlists and now the USB drive indexes properly. It is curious that these same playlists did not cause an issue on my previous 2014 SD card, but did cause an issue on my 2019.
Just for fun, if you have playlists on your USB drive, save them to your PC and then delete from the USB. You may be surprised. Then add the playlists back in a couple at a time until you isolate the bad playlist.
