Use whichever nav app you like best. Waze has some cool features for spotting police and road debris and is more aggressive with rerouting around traffic than Google maps.
I've been evaluating both Google maps and waze since I started using Android auto nine months ago.
Unlike Google maps, Waze has taken me on some very strange routes to get me to a known destination.
Thus far I'm inclined to use Google maps for navigating to new places and Waze when I'm in more familiar areas just for the timely alerts it provides.
For longer road trips, GM navigation is fine for me. There's not many new highways being built. But I switch to Google maps as I get closer to my destination for far more timely local information.
I'll have to try kitesurfers idea to run waze in the background for the alerts while navigating on Google maps. Seems like a good idea.
There are several things in the Waze interface that are annoying and that I've detailed before here. Some of these have been updated but I do believe it still doesn't indicate that you have a multi-lane exit which is very handy when people pile up on on of the exit lanes but not the other, nor do I believe it does multi-stop routes.
BTW Google Maps also warns you of speeding traps, red light cameras and things in the road. Plus I use JBV1 which talks to my Valentine 1 and also does the Waze cop alerts which are still largely false positives.
You can only run one of the three navigators at a time - Waze, Google Maps or factory Nav, though I have managed to run Waze then switch to GM and the Waze service continues to run and gives you audio alerts, but as I already have them through JBV1 I don't need to do that. I wish I could run the factory nav then switch to GM and still have the factory nav running so I could get turn by turn in the HUD but that doesn't work. Also wish the 3 nav options would hand off the destination to the next navigator so you could say be on a route to a place in GM, hit the factory nav and the factory nav would continue the route but that doesn't work either.

I use Waze for the speed traps but google has better maps. How do you get google to give speed/traffic alerts?

AFAICT Google Maps speeding traps has rolled out. The notices are far and few between. Perhaps because they remove all the false positives that Wazes produces.
Just kidding, I have not really analyzed whether GM speeding trap alerts are more accurate than Waze's. They seem to be. As I said, I already get all of Waze's alerts through JBV1.
I use Google Maps. I was driving home from a long trip on the Interstate when I saw a sea of red lights. A quick check with Google maps and it showed a 21 minute delay. google kept saying get off exit 8...I had no idea where I was, and my GPS maps showed no way around it. But Maps kept repeating get off exit 8. Where was exit 8? Then I noticed I was coming up - slowly - to Exit 8. So...trusting Google, I went from left lane to right lane and got off, thinking I will just have to trust whatever maps says. It took me off the exit, and then said to get back on the same Interstate. I was panicking and for sure thought I am going back into the fray. But since I didn't see any alternatives - I got right back on. BINGO! There was a serious truck accident, all lanes stopped and I slipped right on by...with no traffic.. I saw a huge mangled truck with its detached wheel being pulled from the guardrail by police and rescuers..
Waze was acquired by Google some time ago and now I see map features cross pollinating between the two apps. Waze has an army of privilege volunteers that devote many hours of their personal time to updating the map in real-time. It’s like a professional hobby for them. During natural disasters, the volunteers are given privileges to the county operations command center and update the map as reports come in about road closures from first responders. I have to wonder if Waze and GMaps are integrated behind the scenes.
