UPS, check for new C7 lost in transit?
After mailing check overnight delivery (for entire amount of purchase) for new C7 to out of state dealership....7 days later still hasn't arrived. Called UPS and they said it is reported as 'lost in transit"! They "will trace it and email me if they have any news". My car has arrived and been sitting at local dealership for a week. Called bank. It will cost me a $1000 to stop payment and purchase a surety bond and re-issue the check. So far seems that no one has deposited the check as far as we can tell...but I am stressed none the less. Both dealerships say wait to stop payment. Am I protected by any laws either by bank or UPS if the check get stolen or just lost..not for the check amount, but for having to pay the stop payment re-issue fee? Has this happened to anyone else?

Was the check made out to the dealership? Nobody can or will be able to cash such a check and if they do they will be out whatever the amount is. If your bank pays anybody but the dealership it’s made out to then they are the ones who will lose.
Checks are nothing more than paper unless you were dumb enough to make it out to cash and even then it will be traceable.

Yes my wife and I both own businesses, and we have both had it happen. Not with 50 or $60,000.
That’s what wire transfers are for.
If it’s missing for a long time, it’s possible it got shredded in a sorting machine. Sometimes you will literally get a shred of evidence back in a envelope. After they’ve done their periodic maintenance, and cleaning on the machines.
Sometimes you’ll receive nothing, ever, totally MIA.
I doubt somebody is trying to change the name of the payee on the check, and it will all work out fine in the long run.
Good luck!

FedEx is the best way to move negotiable instruments. They have a better tracking service and FedEx will be delivering 7 days a week in near future. All my profit sharing and bonus checks have come by them the last 25 years and never a blip.
Hope all works out for you.

I haven't had good luck with items that UPS has lost. They lost a check I was sending to my Granddaughter. One of my mistakes was using an UPS Store to package and send the check. Even though I was the person sending the check UPS considers the store as the shipper and all status feedback goes to the store, not the person who was actually shipping the item. Most stores don't really pay much attention as it isn't their problem. After many weeks of inquiries UPS returned the envelope to the UPS Store, when the store called me and told me I could pick it up the envelope was torn to shreds with the check missing. Seems like it fell on the floor somewhere and got run over by a pallet truck that was turning. Could see the tire tread marks on the envelope.

I have never heard of a $1k stop payment fee! Once this is fixed I'd move banks as fast as the C7 can get you there...
Another option is close the account so if someone tries to cash it, there are no funds available.

I had to re-issue a large check because the recipient lost the original. Stop payment fee was like $35 or $40. I'm no lawyer but it's not clear to me why you'd have to buy a surety bond.

$1000 for a stop payment fee is absolutely nuts. Normally it is less than $50. If the bank insists on that charge, change banks as soon as you can.
Hopefully UPS can find the envelope and all will be well.

The stop payment is only $35. I have to purchase a bond in order to send another check which is a percentage of the money I sent. I'm not really worried about the actual money for the car. Dealership sent me a prepaid envelope for overnight UPS. I would have preferred FedEx myself

I agree with those above. Who sends checks anymore? I have sold a few Vettes over the years and electronic transfer is easy and the safest method. I hope if the check isnt found quickly you cancel it.
