Yeah, unfortunately after the C5 you need an OBDII scanner or take it to the dealer. You might be able to retrieve the codes at an auto parts store if they have a scanner.
When my new to me 2015 Stingray had a check engine light come on 4 days after purchasing it in early September,I was so pissed, that I drove it to the dealership to get them to check it immediately, but because it was a Saturday, there was nobody capable of checking the code for this trouble, so the service writer told me that if I enable my free trial subscription for On Star, then check with the On Star person to check the code just to see if it was something serious. I did just that, and the On Star person read me the code and I passed that along to the service writer. Thanks it was nothing serious.
So, long story short, if you have On Star, they can check for you.
The cheap and not so cheap OBD II scan tools don't actually help all that much when they don't show 45% of the codes that can exist on the car. They are only good for powertrain issues, maybe ABS and maybe SIR. With newer cars the likelihood is owners will be trying to trouble shoot non power train failures.
