I haven’t seen any current threads on this so I thought I would ask what people here are doing if anything on adding GPS trackers or engine immobilizers to their vettes and if so what brands seem to be the best Thanks
I use Vyncs for tracking two of my vehicles, plugs into the OBD2 port. You can buy an OBD2 port extension cable, to hide the Vyncs module. Remote mounting the Vyncs module higher up inside the dash (below the windshield, and not blocked by any metal) also allows better GPS and cellular signal strength. Mount the Vyncs module with the barcode label facing down, so that the internal Vyncs antennas face up towards the sky. For 100% stealth installation you can also use a splitter-cable behind the dash, so there is nothing visible plugged into the OBD2 port.
When you buy the unit, 1 year of service is included, then after that first year there is about a $100 a year charge for the tracking service, with position updates every minute. The Vyncs only tracks the vehicle, it does not have an immobilizer function. It does have a geo-fencing feature which alerts you if the vehicle exits or enters a defined zone. It claims to have a crash detection/alert feature, but that feature gets mixed reviews (false alerts).
Besides the onstar as mentioned, with the Chevy app you can also geofence your car. So if it goes out of a certain area it can send you a text to give you some early warning. I have it set with a radius around my house. But you can set others as well, so if you're traveling and staying at a hotel, you can set a radius around that hotel.
I do know about Onstar I have had it off and on since 2008 and I flip Chevy trucks annually so I use the free subscription till it runs out then cancel it but I don’t think I want to go that way on this vehicle I think I can get a vehicle immobilizer for around 300$ that interrupts the starting circuitry till you push the button on the key fob and I was thinking of adding a stand alone tracker like was mentioned previous. As we are 30 min from any cities and crime is getting to be a problem this would add a couple more levels of protection at a minimal cost.
