Default “oh deer”

Finally got my estimate from striking the deer! $9274. Replace bumper, grille , hood and right headlight. And a few other small cost parts. That’s a lot for 35mph. Not much damage but replacement parts cost like crazy. Oh well, I should have it back by the 17th provided all the parts arrive on time.

Was almost in your position a couple months ago. I run back roads (in Mexico of course) with a bunch of others vette guys that like to Drive our cars.

My dash cam caught it....in the pic you can see he's about to bolt right in front of me.....the good thing, I was running about 90 at the time and blew right past him before he made 2 more steps...

His buddy over by the trees was just waiting for the train wreck.

Wow, and yet these rats with headgear are protected in Va against hunting out of season. but taken on a road is a fair kill, plenty of new red spots on the roads every morning. hope yours looks like new after the repair!

Ouch! At least you’ll have it back in a couple of weeks. Here’s a recent screenshot from my PDR, there were at least 4 deer and a couple of them can be seen in this pic.

Night time is a very hazardous time to drive vettes where I live. They only close call I had was driving back from MacMulkin and it was at night in upstate New York. Big buck was just strolling across the interstate in no hurry at all. Luckily I was paying attention and applied some brake and steered around him. I would have been toast. He was huge.

Wow, hard to believe it costs that much, but yes, parts and labor are expensive.

Best of luck with the repair - hope it turns out perfect.

I feel your pain. I hit a bear cub back at the end of November (I thought it was a possum)
not only did it make me feel terrible for days... the hassle is still on going.

I paid out of pocket to prevent my insurance going up. I used the dealer bodyshop who did a great job on the repairs, wheel well liner, all new front bumper etc etc. I ordered aftermarket stage 3 aero from EOS to try and save money, but the parts were utter junk. He even admitted he didn’t have any winglets without marks to send me! So that was all a waste of time and would never recommend them to anyone!
In the end I ordered perfect items from ACS.

eventually the car was delivered back to my garage while I was away at Xmas, so that was about a month to be repaired thanks to the EOS set back! The bumper was actually done and ready after 3 days!

bodyshop cost me $1800
aero parts I bought aftermarket cost me about $1800
having the front bumper and everything re-wrapped in PPF is still on going. It’s not looking good at the moment and that is going to cost me $1000 when he gets it right.

so, while it’s probably not as bad as yours, I feel your pain. It’s a hassle more than anything and I want it over and done with! Hopefully tomorrow.

good luck.

I have to dodge burros in my part of the country. I do have experience with dear though. Years ago I was riding my bicycle down hill in the Mt Hood area of Oregon and a dear popped out and I hit it and went flying over the top of my bike! I went head over heals and landed flat on my back. I was lucky. No injuries other than a few minor bruises.

The rise in insurance premiums had you claimed this accident would have likely been significantly less than what you've paid out of pocket... but I'm guessing you realize that now.

Agreed, and after all - what is the point of having insurance if you don't use it (for something as expensive as this)? I can see not reporting a scratched bumper that happened in a parking lot, but something this big?

Plus, I just don't get insurance. Why would your rates go up for an accident that was absolutely not your fault? I mean, I know they are in the business of making money, but come on - that's highway robbery!

My deductible is 1,000
my 6 month premium is 800 already just for the corvette

so..... I assume that after making a claim on my insurance it would have increased way. Beyond 800.

Hit a deer with my mustang a few years ago while on the way to work in a 45mph curve. Hit him on the very first leap from the right side of the road out of the bushes. The scariest part is knowing that deer are creatures of habit and usually take the same routes at the same time of day. The day before I rode my motorcycle and usually take that 45 curve at 60. I'm sure that it was within 2 minutes of that same time in the morning. The deer had to be nearby. That was a very sobering thought for me.

Wow! You did pay out the pocket! Funny you mention aero kit! I purchased Aero stage 2 from Extremeonline and thankfully it had not arrived before the deer incident. That chin splitter would have been damaged! However I did install the side skirts and trunk spoiler while waiting on my insurance company to act. (Christmas holiday time delayed my insurance claim) So when I do receive the vehicle back I only need to install the splitter. So far it is a perfect fit. I also ordered brake scoops from RPI Designswhich are 6 weeks behind at the paint shop but should be here before I get my car back.

My 6 month premium was just under $800. However it renews on January 12 and the new rate is $960. That was proposed before the deer strike. Progressive told me all Alabama policies are going up in my area. Last time Usaa told me that it was the truth so I will have to do my homework and check other clients as well. Which is why I left Usaa. It increased $60 a month upon renewal on a BMW that I owned at the time.

Yea insurance here in Florida is stupid, it goes up every time I renew.
i have only had a license for 5 years. I’m 33. I moved to Florida from London when I was 27.... so I was classed as a new driver, lol...
My corvette and truck cost me a fortune to insure so I didn’t want to put any claims anywhere near the policies.

So, to make myself feel better I got the new aventador back lights and ACS diffuser fins, and new window tint lol.

Well **** happens. I live in a rural area that has more deer than people and hits and near misses are just a fact of life.. The county is cutting back the trees and brush along their right of ways (about 15' from the side of the black top) That has helped a lot.

Up here we learn to drive in the middle of the road at night when safe as that is the busy deer time. Traffic is light and that gives you a few more feet to see them coming. You see a car blinking lights (day or night) most times its not a cop alert but a deer alert

FWIW do not waste any money on those deer chasers people put on their front bumper as they do nothing but make money for the store that sells them!

I ran over a dead deer a month ago. Felt like driving over a rolled up carpet. I thought for sure I'd see parts flying out the rear but except for the smell of deer flesh on my exhaust there wasn't a scratch on the bumper or damage underneath the car.

Dodged a bullet for sure
