Default Tilt motor replacement

Hi All, I will be taking my '14 3lt vert in to a local dealer to have the tilt motor replaced. The tech and service manager both have excellent attitudes and stress that they will be careful etc. but they also insist that the steering column must be "taken down" to do the replacement and that it is a long and complex operation. I have the FSM and the replacement procedure seems very straight forward with no mention of the steering column. I would do it myself if it wasn't under GMPP. I'm curious if they just give a generic answer when talking about the procedure or if they haven't looked it up yet and aren't sure or?
I can bring in copies of the FSM pages for the tech's "convenience" and I'm sure they will love a customer with strong micromanagement skills. (bad idea?).

Thanks E-fish

Good luck. They may be giving a generic answer, but once they get into it and read the repair procedure may not have to mess with taking the column down.

I know this is an old thread, but how did this all pan out. I am considering doing this myself as my wheel has the vertical play. I have the digital FSM, but no index. can you tell me what page they show how to do this?

As a general comment, if I had what I thought was useable information and the dealer did not receive it with opened arms I'd go to a different dealer.

The motor replacement looks very straight forward as long as you are flexible enough to lay on the floor and get under the dash, I have the digital FSM as well and the procedure starts on page 6466 of my manual. You have to remove the knee bolster to access the motor but that is also very easy. I would have done it myself but I have gmpp so ...

Good luck--Joe

Obviously the tech has no experience with the ease of which the motor can be replaced. But he will check the procedure and discover it no big deal. But I would still do such a simple job myself in a much more caring way than that warranty guy. As long as that motor isnt overly expensive.

Do you have any images or diagrams of how to do this?

Sorry I do not but based on post #5, and the fact that the labor time is <1 hour it should be easy.

so maybe I am doing something wrong, but I dropped the bolster and there was a huge metal tray in the way. Also do you need to remove the collar around the column right behind the wheel?
