Default PDR setup

Just bought a new 2LT and have the PDR. Have tried two different 64gb FAT SD cards and I'm still getting the "No SD Card inserted" message

Check the switch on the side of the cards. Make sure they are not set to write-protect.

The issue may be due to the SD card size. 8, 16, 32 GB is suggested. FAT32 format.

The manual calls out a FAT32 formatted SD card, Class 10 required, 8, 16, or 32 GB recommended, but plenty of us run larger cards.

Be certain to insert the card into the glove box SD card reader.

The card capacity is NOT the issue, I am using a 256GB SD card for my PDR. The issue is most likely the formatting of the card. Don’t assume that it is properly formatted, format it yourself using free formatting tools available online and try again.

I agree. Format is probably the issue although most 32 GB and smaller cards usually come in FAT 32 format. Could have also gotten a bad card.

Yeah, that is a better of way saying it. The 32 GB and smaller sizes will usually work fine since the FAT32 format is usually standard.

Over 32 GB will generally need to be formatted first.

You will need to format Fat32 using a 3rd party utility. I found a free utility "Aomei Ntfs2FAT32" which will convert to / from NTFS and FAT32. Since the 1TB card I was playing with came formatted exFAT I first reformatted to NTFS and then ran the utility. The 1TB sd card works OK, but file size limits of FAT32 limit each PDR file to about 90 min.

There may be a better utility, but this worked the one time I needed it.

I had luck using new cards right out of the package - without pre-formatting by:

* not placing the card into the PDR slot yet
* starting the car and letting it run for about a minute or two (do not bring up the PDR screen)
* then putting the memory card into the slot
* wait about 3-4 minutes (or drive somewhere - without the PDR active). The bigger the card capacity... the longer the wait needed.

Then try to use the PDR.

On my 2015, seems the "system" will prepare the card on its own, but you need to insert the card with everything powered up (engine running). The PDR needs to see a new/different card was inserted, and this needs be done with the engine running when you insert the new card. Hot insert.

good luck

Is "how to set up my SD card for PDR" the new "hey kid can you help me program the VCR?"

There's NO capacity limitations except the 2TB upper limit for a card partition that FAT32 is limited to. But it isn't just the "FAT32" partition you need to worry about. The PDR uses a legacy MBR partition scheme, while MOST devices that requires the use of an SD card have moved well past that to GUID partition scheme. MBR is used primarily by PCs made before 200x, as "legacy" system BIOS require the older "Master Boot Record" partitions*. It's been nearly 20 years since MBR is ubiquitous, so the majority of the SD cards delivered today, even if it's formatted FAT32 for the partition, uses GUID partition map scheme because virtually 100% of all PCs today uses UEFI.

For an SD card to work in the PDR, it MUST be formatted MBR partition map, and FAT32 partition scheme. Then you can have a card as big as 2TB for PDR use.

*There's something about FAT32 formatted as MBR scheme having file size limitations much smaller than GUID partition scheme, but that's neither here nor there, nor is it relevant to this discussion unless you plan on recording about a year's worth of video CONTINUOUSLY on the PDR.

I bought a 2pack of this one at Costco. Formatted it to fat32 on Mac and it works good. Same kind of problems and found some cards for whatever reason don’t work for me.

on windows search for a fat32format.exe - it will format > 32 gb drives to fat32, where windows won't.

Thank you for this info. I couldn't figure out what my pdr issue was and wound up reformatting my 132gb sd card 8 or 9 times to fat32. I'll try inserting it after driving up the street and letting the motor run for several minutes. Mine is also a 2015. Probably the older head unit has less processor power and takes longer to read the larger cards.
