Had a couple of state troopers in the parking lot of a gun store ask how fast have you had it? I said, "I nudged 170." Had the same thing happen when I was in the Ferrari, answer was I've nudged 160. Just some guys talking cars and guns...

When asked how fast I've had my C7 up to, I always answer 65. They usually look at me stunned, and then proceed to tell me they’ve had their (Mustang, Camaro, some ‘R’ badged version of an import, etc) up to 90 or 100 or 110, etc. I respond - wow, that’s pretty fast, if I did that I’d probably end up in jail. They usually just walk away shaking their heads in disbelief.
I've had lots of people ask me that and I don't have a problem telling them how fast my Stingray has gone. But it's a good standard to live up to...nothing wrong with not feeling comfortable telling anyone.
That's a commonly asked question of Corvette owners. Another common question is: How much does it cost? If I don't know them, I usually give them a very vague answer and move on.
I'll have to admit that was quite a rude response. Why so uptight about it? I don't like talking to people but it never fails that anytime I wash the car or stop and get gas someone comments on the car or has a story about their uncles brothers cousins moms husband sister had one yada yada yada. But I just smile and keep my answers simple, act humble and interested in their story and then wish them to have a nice day. I'm sure all they remember is "man I saw this badass car today and the owner was cool."
I don't say this in a preachy manor, but c'mon you have to sometimes work those people skills. If someone asks how fast I've had it I say something stupid like I've only been to the track once or its too shiny to go triple digits because its a cop magnet. They won't know the difference.
I agree. There shouldn't be any hesitation about answering that question. It isn't like they can punish you for answering it. The question is if you tell them the truth or add 50 mph to the actual number.

No use to make it anymore than it is.
2017 Z06/Z07 M7 here. I get that question pretty frequently.
Many times I jokingly say "I'm sorry, but my attorney has advised me to NEVER, under any circumstance, even so much as entertain answering that question in public."
Some may have taken my post the wrong way. My discussion was very light and cordial. I was not attempting to be an "***" in any way.
As some have stated, you have no problem sharing with anyone (or strangers) how you drive your car. Others feel it to be a bit more personal and would only share with a select few (if. that). Others seem to have a pat comeback to said question. To each his own. I very much appreciate the post about saying it was somewhat similar to asking the PRICE of the car.
Whatever your response, I guess I'm just fortunate to be able to be able to go out and drive around in a nice ride that is for the most part a head turner.
I just say the fun is in the acceleration, not the top speed.
Also, I have no idea how fast I have gone... I don't know or care, maybe 125 or something for like a second to pull in front of a big rig that was gonna be in front of me on a small highway that had a crazy long on ramp. Totally safe and the car felt like it was going 55. I coasted down to 75 and kept going.
Honestly, that is strangest response to that question I have ever heard in my life. Granted I'm a new Vette owner but why in the world would that be our "protocol"? We bought a street legal race car. People ask me all the time how fast I've gotten it up to and I don't hesitate to tell them. Don't even care if its a cop. What are they going to do, write me a ticket for saying I've driven 131mph? They have no evidence to prosecute me and why would they even care unless they saw me do it?
What's with all the cloak and dagger stuff? It's a car that is meant to go fast. People are expecting it to. Confirming that for them is no big deal. My two cents...
I've gone 136 MPH on track... clearly the car can go much faster.
I get a variety of reactions to this number. Some people tell me they've done that on the highway and thus seem underwhelmed. Others can't imagine going over 100 in any car.
Like @Kevin A Jones said this seems to be a generic sports car question, they know the car is fast and want to hear a story on what its like. I don't give this question a second thought. I have a boat and get the "want did you catch" question constantly. I usually just say "a few" because the details would be boring, people are just trying to be friendly and strike up a conversation.
I usually just tell them "I'm old so not very fast" and my "work wife tells me I drive it like an old man" - that usually gets a laugh and they chat a bit and go on their way.
