Default Android Auto Wireless?

According to https://9to5google.com/2020/08/19/an...wireless-auto/ AA should be available on all phones with Android 11. The article also states, "However, the wireless capabilities have so far only been available on Google’s Pixel phones and Samsung Galaxy phones" but it also states, "A compatible Android smartphone with an active data plan and the latest version of the Android Auto app". Has anybody gotten this to work in the C7? I have a Samsung Galaxy S10+ but I've never seen this working in my car. According to https://www.android.com/auto/compatibility/, it says the Corvette is supported for years 2016 and above. I have a 2016. I suspect it may be that when they use the phrase "active data plan" they mean you have purchased a data plan for the wifi in the car. I don't really want to do that as I have unlimited cellular data with Sprint so why should I pay for data on the wifi? I mean I'd like to see if I can use AA wirelessly to connect from the phone to the car using the wifi but as far as using the internet to download data like maps, traffic, etc, why can't AA use my already paid for cellular data for that and just use wifi for the phone to talk to the car? Has anybody played around with this who say has a data plan for the wifi and a Samsung or Pixel phone and have gotten this to work?

Honestly, I probably wouldn't use this or wouldn't use this often as I already have a ProClip and a wire running, and most of the time I'd like my phone to be charging while driving, but if I can use it I might on occasion.

OP, I have 2019 GS, Samsung G8+, and I've never gotten it to go wireless. I think you might be correct with wifi in car turned on. I'll follow this thread incase there is new info on the subject.

Yup.. I also believe that your cars WiFi would need to be active to use without the cable. Would be nice if someone that has Wifi data service enabled to validate it. Still, I would not pay for the data fees just to dump the cable.

You can set your phone as a wifi hotspot to connect without paying for data service. That's how I connect to I Heart Radio and weather in the car. Doesn't cost me anything.

Is there something wrong with using Bluetooth for a connection? I have a 2015 and Sam 7S (or is it S7?), it will pull all my music and phone files into the car system......it usually takes a few minutes but it gets there. I haven't tried streaming radio because I don't use that service....Sirius radio user here.

Won't work without a compatible head unit. The system in the C7 doesn't have that capability.

Not at all. That's what I do most of the time. I only use the Android Auto when I need to use GPS navigation. So I don't mind using the cable on those occasions.

Also, I think the early C7s used the bluetooth connection for streaming I Heart Radio and Pandora and getting weather. I think they started forcing you to use wifi in 2016.

Jeff V, I agree. This article says the wireless capability for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto is finally coming to 2021 models. So with that said, the capability lies first with what is in the car, as well as the phone itself.

What do you mean by "turned on"? How do you turn it on? How do you turn it off? By "turned on" did you mean "have an active data plan"? Because I believe the wifi is turned on whenever the car is turned on. Occasionally I see "andrew's corvette" as a wifi SID. I can't connect to it. It wants a password which I've long since forgotten. And I don't want a data plan as I already have unlimited data on Sprint.

Sprint charges for hotspot.

BTW why would you need to set up a hotspot to use I Heart Radio and weather? I mean can't you just use your cell phone's data plan?

Nothing wrong with using Bluetooth to play music from your phone. But that ain't Android Auto. Since you have a 2015 you don't have an AA option due to hardware. Running AA using a Bluetooth connection won't work. Bluetooth is not fast enough to drive the big screen in your car. With AA and a wired connection, you actually use the USB for music/podcasts/etc. Bluetooth is still used but it's only used for phone calls.

BTW Bluetooth does not "pull all my music and phone files into the car system". There's no place in the car system to store such things, that is unless you mean a USB stick in which case Bluetooth is not involved.

Where's your source to that information. The page I referenced said that the C7 is compatible with AA and it didn't say "'cept for wireless". I know the C8 has wireless AA.

The pages I reference did not mention anything about having to have a 2021 Corvette, just a 2016 and later Corvette. You're statement may very well be true, hence my questioning here if anybody else got wireless AA working on a C7. I think a wifi data plan is required. I don't think it should have to be but if it's required I'm not gonna buy a data plan as I don't need it.

My Sprint plan doesn't charge for hotspot, up to 10 GB.

You can use your phone to stream through bluetooth audio, but you can't control it through the car's touchscreen, unless you're connected via wifi or Android Auto. The weather icon was just another example of something that doesn't work unless you're connected to wifi. The My Chevrolet app is another example.

If you go to Settings from the Home Screen, you can turn wifi on or off. From there, you can set up which wifi networks you want to connect to, like a hotspot.

What's so hard to understand. The C7 does NOT HAVE wireless Apple car play or Android Auto capability no matter what you do or have. You either plug into the usb port to get it or not.

The page is wrong. The HMI 2.5 module in the C7 does not support 5GHz wifi. It only has 2.4 GHz.

Look under 'operating frequencies'.

Really? According to this:

Sprint: Mobile hotspot use starts at $10 per month for 1 GB, regardless of whether you have an unlimited smartphone data plan. If you do have an an unlimited smartphone plan, you can tack on 5 GB of hotspot use for $30 per month. By comparison, Sprint’s tablet data plans cost $15 per month for 300 MB and $30 per month for 3 GB.

It's my understanding that in order to use the weather icon, via wifi or not, you need to pay for some sort of OnStar connection. I don't pay for OnStar. Haven't ever. But during the trial period, the weather icon did indeed work. Again, I've never used my car's wifi. The My Chevrolet app is a joke. Since I always use AA when driving I don't need to stream music via Bluetooth, which has subpar frequency response and if I need to know about the weather I just say "Hey Google, what's the weather", or for a quick assessment, just look out the window!

If you go to Settings from the Home Screen, you can turn wifi on or off. From there, you can set up which wifi networks you want to connect to, like a hotspot.
I assume since I've seen "andrew's corvette" wifi SID that my setting is already on. I'll check it though. But then again, I do not wish to pay for a data plan when I already have unlimited and I do not wish to pay for a hotspot from Sprint. Especially just to occasionally use AA in wireless mode. It just isn't worth the extra $$$.

Well technically the page isn't wrong, rather it's misleading or just neglects to provide the required information.

Interesting. So then it's the 5GHz that is required to run AA wirelessly. That makes sense.

(And, of course, it'd be about $2k to upgrade the hardware I bet... )

I have been looking into this myself.

As Jeff V stated, this only works on a few Android based aftermarket head units.

There is a thread over on XDA where a techie built a homemade dongle and some software for Android phone (requires root). https://forum.xda-developers.com/gen...-auto-t3813163

There is a Car Play dongle available but I hear mixed results on its use.

I think we've strayed off the original question, and the answer is that AA can't be used wirelessly on a C7. The conversation on wifi doesn't apply at this point.

You can connect to your home network in your garage, just as a test, to show which apps use wifi. I'm not saying it's anything special. Weather and Pandora are just examples.

I don't intend to argue over phone plans, but here's my Sprint plan. I was wrong on the limit. I can use the hotspot up to 50GB. I've had the plan for years, and I have no idea if it's still available.

Yes we have strayed but I did learn something important - wireless AA requires 5GHz. The C7 doesn't have 5GHz.

You can connect to your home network in your garage, just as a test, to show which apps use wifi. I'm not saying it's anything special. Weather and Pandora are just examples.
I think that would first require I get a garage!

Alas, I'm in an apartment and the carport that I park in is too far to connect to my home wifi. If programmed correctly, an app has no idea and does not care what the transport mechanism is, be it wired, wireless, or just cellular data. The only difference in the TCP/IP stack is the speed.

As I said before, I've used the Weather app (unless you are talking about some different sort of weather app - I'm talking about the one in MyLink that there by default) and Pandora with my phone and wifi disabled. As I said, the dealer initially set up the wifi but I never used it and have since forgotten the password. And I never signed up for any data plan. Pandora worked fine from my phone to the MyLink app with just cellular data. But I ditched Pandora long ago.

I don't intend to argue over phone plans, but here's my Sprint plan. I was wrong on the limit. I can use the hotspot up to 50GB. I've had the plan for years, and I have no idea if it's still available.
Yeah, plans do change. Whatever the plan I see little use in a hotspot for my usage pattern. A hotspot might be useful when you're out and about but I tend to be in front of a large desktop or laptop with great connectivity when I'm at home and before covid at work. I don't care to compute from the coffee shop, or if I do it's only casual surfing. I don't strain my eyes attempting to watch TV shows or movies on a tiny screen nor do I want to play video games on such a small screen. I have larger screens and better sound systems to do those sorts of activities. And I don't see a wifi hotspot as any faster than my cellular data plan because after all, that hotspot is only as fast as that. There may be a very few situations where I might want to use a hotspot. For example, in an airport terminal between flights when I want to have the larger screen of my laptop than my phone's screen but who the hell is flying nowadays anyway?
