Secret to a clean engine compartment is frequent cleaning before it get too bad.
I use Windex and cotton rags and makeup swaps to get into the nooks and crannies. Works great and no chance of damaging anything.

This is how I do it and my engine & bay look like it did when I got the car 5 years ago. Mileage = 27,500.

Snow foam + foam cannon + pressure washer + boar hair brush + Sonus Trim & Motor Kote Acrylic Wax Sealant.

Can't beat this combo if you want a spotless engine bay that glows.

Cleaning the engine of your automobile is essential maintenance to keep it looking good and extending its lifespan. To simplify the task, utilize the engine cleaner at the car wash.

Lets see. Don't drive the Corvette in the rain, but I use water to clean the engine bay.

I use Wash, Wax All and a microfiber cloth. I also use a lot of compressed air.

Spray with Simple Green, let it sit for a few minutes. Spray off with a garden hose, blow it off with compressed air, the start it up to fully dry.

As mentioned before Simple green and aluminum do not mix. Over time it will oxidize/tarnish the surface unless the aluminum has been clear coated.. I used it in an ultrasonic cleaner once on motorcycle carbs, they came out heavily tarnished. Never again.

As others posted above, I'm fortunate that started the regime when the engine was still clean in the very beginning. After every hand-wash, I pop the hood and use soap and water to dry and wipe down the engine. If driven in the rain, I wipe down immediately after engine cools off. Plus, I always open the hood after every drive soon as I get into the garage.

How again does it extend the lifespan of the engine? I had a car that went to 480K and the only wash it gets is if I spilled fluids and I use brake cleaner for oils and water for coolant when we changed thermostats or the radiator.
