I drove 5.5 hrs from Manchester NH to Philadelphia PA area and my average was 26 mpg with a lot of that at around 80 mph (no cruise control - fully done by hand) and a lot of acceleration and deceleration in wild traffic on Route 15 in Connecticut. And 1 or 2 good pulls just to do it.
But more lately my driving is around town in traffic for short trips. Red lights are bad. Every time I have to stop at a traffic light I switch to Eco mode to keep the fuel flow low-ish. On short, around-town trips, my mileage has been around 14 mpg. So highway driving is certainly better.
On the NJ turnpike I had a Porsche 911 with a big spoiler wing "drafting" me for a good part of the way. Felt good to have the 911 behind me at around 80-some mph.
One thing most people in the Northeast might smile at is that, no matter how fast you go, there's always a guy with a yellow NJ license plate who's going faster. You could be going 300 mph, and there's a guy from New Jersey going 310.
Thats 3 cross country road trips on interstates in 7th gear without AFM. West of Minnesota and east of Vegas, its possible to run cruise control at 80 mph on the interstates and not have to touch the brake for 30 to 45 minutes at a time multiple times all day long. Unimaginable to someone like me who's lived whole life on the east coast.
On my last trip , as i left Minneapolis headed west on I 94 I punched in my Hotel at Glacier Natl Park on the Nav and the voice said: "in 856 miles turn right" Never hear anything like that driving in new jersey!
