Please NO. The first question you want to ask your glass installer is what removal
method do they use : KNIVES or STRING. You do not want anybody using a blade
tool to remove your old glass! The pull string method is the smarter, safer way to
remove the old glass and most professional shops appear to be using it. This is
what Safelite used on my Vette and another vehicle.
Here are some tube videos I found of the string removal
Thanks for posting , some people just have no idea what a good installer is or what tools are used and yet they keep posting...
That is what is used but we go one better , we do not use any power tools to drive it , ours is by hand so the technician can better control the cut

Good point. When Safelite did mine, the string winding tool was driven by hand.
The oem glass that they used also had two plastic locating pins at the top to
ensure accurate placement of the windshield.
If you ever see a metal body car with rust around the windshield, it is
probably because the glass was removed using knives and the paint
was cut through. The damage is usually concealed under the trim, and
might not become apparent for years.

when Safelite did mine, I watched. When he was winding the string it grabbed the weather stripping at top of windshield and made a mark on it. He realigned and finished. I had it done in October so didn’t drive much then the shutdown. So I was out cleaning it in garage and noticed the mark was more pronounced. As time went on it just got worse. The Safelite I took it to was closed because of COVID. I finally called to ask about it. They sent me to one that was open. I was all worried they would say they didn’t do it, it had been to long, or something to keep from fixing it. When I got there I told them what happed and showed it to them. All they ask me was my phone number. Didn’t even ask to see paper work. They ordered new weatherstripping from GM and set up an appointment. This was a different shop than the first one. I was treated like an old customer. I will never use anyone else for glass. They stand behind their products and service. Can’t ask for better service.
