Two years ago I purchased my 15' C7 from them at an excellent price. Very happy with the service and my buying experience.

So while I'm considering my first Vette and browsing the forums I came across this thread.

I'll relate my first and only experience with Carmax. It wasn't to buy a car, it was to sell one. Straight up sale, not as a trade-in. It WAS about 7 years ago and things do change but,,,,,,,,,,,

"What can I get for my car ?"

[reads from computer] "$16K if it's in excellent condition, 14K if it's very good and 12K if it's average. But I've got to be honest with you, very few cars grade out as "excellent""

"Sounds OK. Have your guys check it out."

"OK, it'll take about 1/2 hour and we can talk more then.

1/2 hour later the salesperson comes back with the report and says "Great news. Your car checks out in really good shape."

"Great, so what's the offer ?"

"$10K"

[EXIT stage left]

Note - this is NOT an exaggeration of any kind.

True but it depends on the market at the time. Lots of demand for used cars lately so offers are probably more competitive. Carmax has inventory and has tended to provide clean cars at a slightly higher price than others because of it. They are really just a traditional dealer on steroids except they just have that no-haggle policy (which more retailers are adopting). Waiting on a 17 Stingray with Carvana right now at a great price. “Coming soon for 3 weeks now but if the car is what they say, the deal may be worth it. Seems these online outfits have been more competitive in their offers on Vettes too.

Not sure I understand your point. As I mentioned it was 7 years ago.

But what does the "market at the time" have to do with the interaction between myself and their guy ?

I have never purchased a car through them or any other “online” dealer. But I may seriously consider it on my next purchase. I have really gotten tired of all of the games dealerships try to play with you. Usually at their first hint of nonsense I get up and start to leave, then they change their tune. But I’m truly tired of their BS. And it’s all of them.

I had a good experience at CARMAX this week. Friendly, efficient and aggressive pricing. They gassed up the car, handed me the keys and asked that I return in 20 minutes. In addition, they offered to send the car to my local CARMAX at no cost or obligation. Pretty hard to complain about service like that. No pressure tactics, no visit from the manager, etc. If I felt better about the car I would have bought it on the spot. That's on me, not them.

Not MacMulkin, Kerbeck and another few that are no drama dealers. But agree the majority of them are clown shows. I can't stand one minute of it.

If they wanted your car at the time, they would have offered you more. Their lowball was an indication that the market for you car was low but they could make money at their lowball price. Many Corvette owners here are getting good prices for their cars because the market for used cars is good. As Corvettes are lower production and C8s are in limited supply, seller’s market.

Just for fun, I checked with Carvana. That is $8,000 more than I paid for it in January 2020. If there was a C8 HTC, I might go for it, even though I really like the C7.
