I find that my Garmin Nuvi provides more accurate Nav directions than my factory Nav, but after I updated the original Nav software on the car it has performed fairly well.

I'd switch to using your smart phone instead. The smart phone should have real time, or very close to real time display which is invaluable in large metropolitan areas.
It is the smart phone that's feeding the Google Maps/Waze/Apple Maps to the Infotainment system "Apple CarPlay" or "Android Auto." So you are getting the latest info available. The bottom line here is you really need to review the route(s) Google (or the others) has mapped out for you. Sometimes there are options provided and you best look at them and not just select the top/first one provided. I've had to select the second or third option on occasion as some will wind you through housing areas or who knows where as pointed out in the OP.

on my last two trips using google maps and near the end of the trip maps took me off the interstate. For the last 30 minutes or so of trip google maps took me to one lane country roads. The roads with hidden drive ways and 35/25 mph signs. Upon my arrival at my destination i realized the interstate exit was next to my hotel. so why did google maps take me on the back roads? Google has changed the algorithm to calculate fuel consumption and direct you to the most fuel efficient route. According to Google this is done to reduce your carbon footprint!! i now keep going when maps tell me to exit.
there is a method to revert maps to the old algorithm still looking for that
It does that once in a while. It's to keep you on your toes.
You can switch from most gas efficient to "fastest". But with my search on the Internet I can't find a setting in google maps to do that. Further research indicated google maps won't let you choose fastest. We are stuck with most fuel efficient. Please chime in if you can find a setting. https://thenewswheel.com/google-maps...in-new-update/

That is messed up on Google's part (not allowing you to choose) but I am not surprised (big tech likes to run your world.) I prefer Google maps on Android Auto over the GM nav but I'll have to keep this in mind in the future when I use it as I won't be automatically taking all their directions verbatim. All of these nav devices know of a way to get you there, but that doesn't necessarily always mean they know the best way to get you there. You have to have a little idea as to how you want to go yourself and then just use these nav maps as sort of an affirmation to the route in your head.
When I was younger and first started to drive, we planned our cross-country trips the old school way with printed paper maps of your entire route. I have a trip planned for upstate NY and into VT in a couple of weeks and I have it all planned out how I wan to go via Google maps. I started flying when I was in high school and so with the aviation background I flew the route in the new MSFS and it was like flying in Google maps satellite view, (although MSFS uses Bing maps which aren't typically as current, but it still works well.) Similar to a VFR flight plan, I have a good idea of the landmarks, intersections, and POI's to look for all in my head, like I've literally flown the route at 3,500' before I even get there. I always called that VFR dead reckoning navigation sort of akin to what flying over an HO scale train set would look like. Technology is cool.

That pretty much ends my use of google maps. I'll stick to the NAV that came with the car. It has worked pretty good for me anyway. I know others don't like it, but it has always done a good job for me.
I was on I85 south of Petersburg Va coming home from VIR a couple of years ago and my Google Maps had me exit to some local road. I exited but then realized my Sirius radio was going in and out and the Maps were all screwed up. After returning to the route I knew was correct I figured out that it was a bad/loss of GPS and Sat signats causing them both to be screwy. I'm guessing the tree canopy was affecting the signals. Or maybe aliens.......
You're not understanding what I've posted. The C7's NAV is difficult to decipher why it gives the directions it does to some of us. I think you're off on another tangent again.
I often don't understand what you write... and maybe that's partially intentional on my part since you're always so hypercritical of ANYTHING you don't agree with.

That's a sad deal.😔
With a system that haywire + not knowing the territory, roads, neighborhoods = a bad situation.

I have not had any problems with the Nav, since I did the update! I also like being able to transfer an address on my phone to the car Nav.
