For those of you who bought through Carmax or Carvana (and it seems like universal positive comments about both dealers), I know that often times cars can be delivered or transferred to you from out of your area. If you bought a 'distant' car, did you have the opportunity to test drive it first? Or was it a case of pay for it, take it home, and if it turns out there's a problem, bring it back for resolution? I'm assuming that Carvana and Carmax would weed out any issues prior to offering the car for sale, so I'm guessing that buying an out-of-your-area car from either of those dealers was a low-risk deal.
I just tried to trade vettes with Carmax on a transfer deal. They sound safe. I backed off due to difficulty of finding someone there by phone who was smart enough to complete the sale. The first one was real good and sent me an email but when I responded to buy he didn't get back to me. The number he gave me went to the 800 voice mail and then it became a nightmare. I tried chat room buy the call dropped. I found another one but when reading the disclosure I heard the word "theft" said fast and I stopped her but she didn't have anymore info so I just cancelled the idea and decided to keep my beautiful 14 coupe and have a set of Zo6 style repro wheels coming. It's really bad out there for astute buyers.
I transferred a Mercedes-Benz from Carmax Irvine, Texas to Carmax Garland, TX years ago for $599.00. The car spent it's entire life in Corona Del Mar, CA. Perfect! Didn't need to test drive. Low miles creampuff!
I had my vette transported from Maryland to RI by Carmax for $150. Non refundable and doesn't go towards the price of the car.
Went over the policy in great detail before doing this. Once the car arrives you get all the time in the world to test drive, look it over, etc... They hold it for 7 days while you decide. After that, it is listed in its new location (RI) for sale.
I bought it in 45min after seeing/driving it. 2.5years later, couldn't be happier.

Carmax. Found a perfect, as described, C7 GS Vert and had it moved from Chicago to south Florida. They detailed it and I took it for a thorough test drive. Around $600 cost. If I chose to pass, it would have cost me the $600. Everything was as described. The front end of the deal was by phone, text and e-mail. The in person part was at the Carmax about 15 miles away. Perfect transaction.
Purchased multiple cars from Carmax, fantastic, safe, and easy. Deliveries are fast and simple though the shipping costs climb pretty good as you get farther out. Also you eat that cost if you don't purchase the car. Though you get to thoroughly inspect and drive the car before you buy. Also you get a month after you buy to return it for any reason. I did get them to eat the shipping on one car I brought into the store as it was loaded with little rock clips. Right now everything is so overpriced but don't let that fool you. If you see something you like call and block it fast as all the best deals don't last hours. Your best bet is to save the car and options you are looking for in a search and they'll send you notices as matches show up. Again jump on them right away or they'll be gone. I also like still dealing with a store so Carmax is more comfortable for me. I saw a nice auto at Carvana and was going through the process to get the car but stopped when they wanted my bank account number and funds available BEFORE they would ship. I'm sure it is a non-issue and how they deal with everyone but I'm not providing my bank account to just a site w/o a car sitting in front of me. I would rather have it come to a store, THEN I look and provide purchasing info AFTER I see and drive the car. Best of luck and be sure to provide pictures once you get your car.
