My 2017 Z51 is due for an oil change soon. I have been trying to locate Mobil 1, ESP 0w-40 2dexos,oil in the local area, Texas 78132.
No really having any luck finding it on the shelves, can order it on line at higher cost.
My question is the use of Mobil 1, 5w-30 2dexos safe to use until I stock up on the 0w-40? Only have 12,500 miles on it, about 3000 per year.
You can generally order it on line for less cost. Try Rock Auto, Summit Racing and others.
Either ESP Dexos 2 5w-30 or 0w-40 will work fine in the 2017 C7. I preferred the Mobil 1 0w-40 in my C7 GS because of it's better cold start protection.
I used Mobil 1, 5w-30 synthetic in my 15 Z06, dexos 2, like you , I could not find the 0-40w that I really wanted. After doing the oil change and driving it a time or two, everything was fine, car ran good with good oil pressure. When I put the new oil in the tank, I noticed that on the lid on the oil tank said 5-30 dexos on it, so even though I would have liked to had 0-40 weight, felt okay using the 5-30 weight since I guess that's what it came with from the factory. Bought 2 ea. 5 gal jugs at Walmart for $19.95 ea. The only oil available in 0w-40 weight when I bought mine was the European formula and I had read on the Forum not to use it.

I normally get my 0w40 online from Summit Racing. This past autumn when I did my annual oil change, Summit was on back order. So, I successfully ordered from Speedway Motors. Price was only slightly more IIRC.
5W-30 is fine for street driven C7s... it was the factory fill until 2019. The 0W-40 has benefits but it was mostly introduced to eliminate the need to change oil for track use.

Just pointing out that it's not "2dexos". The GM logo is supposed to be a "D", but looks like a 2. Look for a 0/5w-40 oil with a blue Dexos 2 logo or a 5w-30 oil with a green Dexos 1 logo.

I still use Mobil 1 5W-30 in my 2014 and it has done well - I do not track the car. I understand the 0W-40 also helps with cold starts, but I do not daily drive my car so I am not too concerned with the cold start protection.
If I am missing something on the cold start issue, I would love to hear about it.

You aren't missing anything Jack. Been using Mobil 1 5W-30 for 14 years and 242,000 miles in my Toyota RAV4. Lots and lots of cold starts here in Wisconsin. I think the last thing that will go on this car is the engine. Like new. I only use 0W-40 ESP on my 2019 Grand sport because the owner's manual calls for it. Change the oil once a year so no big deal buying the over priced and hard to find 0W-40 ESP.
If you don't track your car and can wait another six weeks, buy two 5-qt. jugs of 5w30 M1 from Walmart and get a fat $10-15 rebate for each jug ($10 for M1 Advanced and $15 for EP). This is assuming they'll continue their rebate program again on April 1 - Sept. 31 like they have for the past several years and the rebate amounts won't change. That's $2.40/qt. for EP based on current Walmart prices.

Why would you think that Mobil 1 5w-30 would not be safe?

The viscosity difference between a 5w and 0w above 0F is totally negligible. Manufacturers usually specify a 0w just to guarantee that you're using a synthetic oil to meet the Oil Life Monitor requirements. In GM's case, the oil needs to be synthetic to meet Dexos specs anyway.

The fact that I rarely drove my C7 GS in the winter is what concerned me the most in regard to cold starts. When your C7 sits for weeks or even months in the cold and then you decide to take it for a spin on a clear chilly day it needs all the cold start protection you can get.
I also noticed my warm oil pressure increased by a few lbs after switching from Mobil 1 5w-30 to 0w-40.
I still use the 5w-30 in my 2015 Z51. I just passed 104k miles and runs great. I cant find the 0w-40 and dont feel that I need it. I dont track the car. It does get cold here in southeast VA but not like up North mostly gets to the lower 20's sometimes
