Never liked the tail lights on the 7th generation Corvette and I knew if ever I owned one there would have to be some changes made. Even when Corvette owners were picking up their new 2014 to 2019 car they jokingly called the tail lights "Camaro lights", and that sad looking teardrop vent on the outer end wasn't helping much either. I set out to change the styling back to the separate lens classic look of the earlier generations of the Corvette. Please don't ask details on how I done this as the story is too long. I'll just say I run a custom shop and I built a fiberglass overlay panel that fixed the problem. GM's original design My revamp. A fiberglass overlay panel that eliminates the black frame and teardrop vent. Uses the original light assembly but divides it for the classic look.
Those vents are functional. They allow air to flow through the transmission and differential coolers in the rear fenders and allow the hot air from those radiators to be released from behind the bumper cover.
If you had a widebody car, the wider vents adjacent to the diffuser may be enough to make up for the loss of venting at the top, but with a narrowbody, the diffuser vents are tiny and the majority of the venting comes from the taillight. In either case, heat rises, so the hot air from those radiators will now be collecting behind your cover and around your taillight instead of being released from the car.
Not my taste but glad you're happy with the results. I immediately expected ovals and agree it looks like a 5th gen Camaro. Appreciate the uniqueness regardless!
Thanks, but wouldn't round or oval lights make it look like the generation of Corvette that round or oval lights came with?
The round or oval tail lights was a corvette thing since the early days. The C7 broke new ground with the hashmark style. When the C7 hit the market purists were upsets about the lights. I remember the C6 got flack for no pop up lights too.
All in all you are clearly skilled at what you do. I do wonder if a oval or round version would sell. I would definitely consider it.
