Default Bummer!

If you’re wondering what this is, it’s a hole in the side of the block of the 60# mile LT1 in my ‘16 Stingray. Cruising at 60 mph and the car shuddered, shut down, and I coasted to the shoulder. Something broke inside! Now, my Corvette guy is looking for an engine.

Damn, what an unlucky thing to happen. Best of luck finding the replacement engine and then getting the car back on the road. Any idea what went wrong to cause the hole in the block?

Peltier Chevrolet in Tyler, Texas changes the oil and recently flushed the coolant. Kirk Good (K&K Restorations) does all the mechanic work on my Corvettes and that’s where I had it towed. I love Hagerty Drivers Club for roadside assistance. The driver from Crows Towing knew how to load the car and had taken other broken Vettes to Kirk, who he knew as “the Corvette guy.”

No idea what caused it but I’m sure my guy will tear it down and find out once he gets a replacement engine. Oil life was at 40% and oil pressure was about in the normal range of 35 psi just before it went. Temps were in normal range and I haven’t driven it hard in quite a while. Street driving only, I don’t track it.

From where it appears to me to be, I'd think a rod. I've seen similar in race engines, unfortunately. All the best since you are likely to need a short block, at the least.

Yes, I’m sure it was a rod. This makes three engines I’ve destroyed but the other two were in drag cars at high rpm’s. That was back in the ‘70s. This happened at low speed so something failed.

No, I bought it in March of ‘2021 and it had 42k miles on it. It’s just shy of 60k now. Carfax shows it had regular maintenance and the torque converter was replaced in 2018. I’ve had no problems with it until this month. The outer bearings in the dif failed and the bearings aren’t available so it got a new differential two weeks ago. Now this!

I only asked whether you bought it new because ya just don't know how the car was treated before you. I'm of the opinion that our 2014 to 2019 Corvettes are made very well, and can withstand tracking treatment.

That seems strange that a differential would go bad. Don't read about it much here.

I stopped in Peltier Chevrolet company to enquire about ordering a new Corvette a few years back. Love that area of Texas you live in.👍
