Set of cup wheels I have had in my garage for a few years. I decided to put them on the car and noticed this slice on the side. Super sport tires, 2017 date code with only about 1k miles. Slice looks like it is paper thin and isn’t loosing air. Any one else have this happen? My first reaction is not to use the tire any longer but also feel like it not a real issue. Maybe just keep as a back up?
There appears to be a shiny thin layer on the outside of the tire so it’s not deep. I have jammed my finger into it and doesn’t seem deeper than this outer layer. No air leaking. I may go to local Michelin tire dealer and see if they will inspect it.
Sorry to hear, I saw your post yesterday. You were excited to get these on your car. I have one tiny slice on my Tahoe tire with 0 issues in the last 13k miles, but yours seems more severe as the line on the tire below the slice is distorted, bulging downward. Looks a bit worse than just a surface cut. Is it front or rear? You feel any vibrations? I wouldn't take those to a track event or on roadtrips, but driving on it around town will be fine. It's a rigid runflat tire with a 25 or 30 sidewall, at city speeds. It's not like you're running 200mph with it on the straight at Nurburging. Chances are you'll hit a pothole at the right angle and it'll get worse or finally give. Just limp home on the runflat and throw it out.
Drove about 20 miles last night and no vibration. Actually rode smooth and quiet. I like the super sport tires on the street better than the cup 2 tires. Yes heading down to Carlisle with my dad and our friend who has a black zr1. I was going to take the car with these wheels on it but now I think I will take the stock wheels even though they have the cup 2 tires on it. Are u heading down? If you see me and my friend Mike in his black zr1 stop and say hello. We will be parked next to each other.
This tire has hit a pothole or other road hazard and bulged from inside out and should be replaced. Hopefully the wheel is not damaged.
Suggest the discount tire inspection route.

I am very cautious when it comes to tire damage and Iwould replace that tire. But, check with a trusted tire shop who can inspect it more closely and then decide on what to do.
I have run tires like that. I open the cut a little w/ the tip of a screwdriver and look to see if I can see any cut cords. If I do see some the tire is gone asap. If I don't see cord I may run it locally for a while but now way I would take it on a trip.
Regardless of where you go to have it inspected they are guaranteed to tell you it HAS to be replaced.
There is no reason they say anything other than that,,,
A) they are there to sell tires
B) If they say "no problem, all's good to go" and your tire blows causing an accident - lets say you hit a van full of kids - and you try the defense "XYZ Tire Company said it was ok" they are screwed.....
Under negligence law, wrongdoing consists of the failure to live up to the "standard of reasonable care." The standard is breached by action that creates a risk that no reasonable person would impose upon others.
Ordered a new set of Michelin’s today. I’m having a hard time spending money after my 401k lost 70k in 4 months. Well I guess my car is up 70k in the last 2 years so I’m even. 😂

Still not worth endangering you or your passengers life in the event of a blow out on the highway. Or even other peoples lives if you lose control around other cars. You made the right decision.

^right here, was just about to type this while scrolling down.
Totally pointless to get it inspected. 1000% chance they'll say needs replacement.
Might as well call up Bernie Sanders and ask him if he thinks we should print up another couple trill and hand it out to ease inflation pain. (prob gonna say YES)
Tires are a hell of a lot more rubust than people give them credit for. I've had times in the past I ran into the cords through all the tread and tire was still fine.
Unless you are tracking it or something just run it
Guys - Im just playing devils advocate for discussion purposes. Even if the slit blew out the air at some point wouldnt the run flat keep you safe? I would replace too but just curious what you think.
