My friend crashed a cheap Isuzu truck, when he came around a sharp curve and his throttle stuck. The floor mat jammed the pedal. His powerful 150 horsepower truck spun around & went down a 15' hill before colliding with a horse fence.

I was a police officer and I've seen people crash in a lot of ways. Sometimes people pass out from medical conditions. One kid ran off the interstate tuning his radio. Anybody here ever tune their radio while driving?

Please don't be condescending about a fatal crash, especially when we don't know what happened. The article doesn't say how fast he was going, likely because they don't know.

There was a witness!?

When a mom lost her car and teen daughter in a Wal Mart parking lot, we had a "witness" claim that he saw the car drive away with a girl screaming help! I initiated a massive search w/ lot of resources, including a helicopter. We soon discovered that the mother had forgotten she moved the car when she went into a second store!

I used to ride 1000cc sport bikes and Ive owned 4 corvettes. I know that most people take or have taken unnecessary chances. I've had close calls.

Realistically, I deserve to be dead. I'm thankful I didn't always get what I deserved.

"Im happy no one else was killed"?

Me too, but doesn't that go without saying? I'm also happy a tornado didn't kill my family last night. I'm happy I didn't back over a puppy when I went to the store.

None of that came to my mind, when I saw this. I'm just sorry that a person died in a violent crash.

Im not trying to talk down to anyone. The internet has a way of desensitizing us all. I know I can be a different person on here, at times.

I have to believe that if you guys saw the aftermath of this crash, in person, you would feel overwhelming sadness, first and foremost

I left policing 3 years ago and I'm haunted daily by the deaths I saw.

Because that part of 130 is busy all the time. I drive it regularly and there is always enough traffic on the toll road around Austin that someone would have seen it.

Which brings up another possibiity. Someone may have been toodling along at 50 mph which also happens on that road. He may have lost control trying to miss them and whoever it was continued on their blissful way. There are a lot of possibilities. That road has some decent places to stretch the car's legs a bit, but IMHO, full dark is not the time to do it.

Another element to factor in is the new mid-engine layout of the C8, they intentionally handle and respond differently that conventional front engine. I experienced at Bondurant school the differences between front and rear/mid engine handling. One of the things I remember the instructor Johnny O'Connell saying was "when you see a big sweeping off ramp, the crash marks at the beginning of the ramp are the cheap cars (front engine - understeer). The crash marks at the end of the ramp are the expensive cars (rear/mid engine - oversteer)". Not saying how it might have factored into this, but car input and its response in an emergency situation will be different between the two and needs to be understood.

I'm of the opinion the driver was going way too fast in that sweeping turn of 130 when it had just started raining that morning. The roads are slick then because it has not rained here that much this winter.

It rained pretty solid that morning so once you go off the pavement it would be extremely slick and you would not slow down much until you hit something.

130 has a lot of uneven spots where the ground has settled over the years so you get these sudden transitions where the car unloads it's weight in a turn. Combine that with rain and too much speed for the condition and you can see how a car that can snap oversteer could lose control.

Maybe the conditions were horrible making that a terrible decision, but let's be realistic, in good conditions you can cruise 100% safely at 120 and have complete control of the car.
And that's just cruising. Still safe to get well above that in good conditions with no other traffic around

Are you familiar with that part of 130 near COTA?

You can't drive that rode at 120 in any car in the curves. Too many bumps that unload the car.

On the straight you can do just about any speed but you still have expansion joints and bumps/transitions in a lot of places.

I drive it a lot and 80-100mph is no issue. Above that and in the rain is not a good idea.
