I finally updated my 2017 GS nav system last year because I was concerned that updates might not be offered in future years. I waited for one of the $100 offers.
How can you tell what version you have in the car currently?
Settings > Software Info > Map. Problem is, it gives you a part number rather than a date. You can try putting that part number into Google to see what date it's from, but you don't always get a clear answer.

Thank you all for the info. I do usually use my phone for nav via Android Auto. I just feel I lose some usability with Android Auto over using the blue tooth and phone app already on board.
And I provided a free, easier, and superior alternative. The factory junk is close to two years out of date by the time it gets into your hands.
Superior in some ways but not others.
The factory Nav projects onto the HUD and works in areas without cell coverage. Mutes music during voice commands. Don't need to plug/unplug my phone each time in get in/out of car. Doesn't use up cell data.
Both systems have their advantages, neither is perfect. We have both and use both, but use the factory Nav more often.
Cache your maps ahead of time. That solves the coverage and data usage problems. Buying a wireless AA/Carplay dongle is cheaper than the junk map updates.
Thank you for your valuable information on the use of a smart phone when using an electronic guidance in the car. Keeping on topic and in direct response to the question asked, post #2 satisfied the question asked.

The factory Navigation sends the turn, distance to turn, updates traffic alternate routes to the HUD. You do not have to take your eys off the road to access this information. I missed hitting a 50' roll of hose that came off a vehicle, because my eyes were on the road! I prefer watching the road for FOD, than missing them when I try to see something on a small sreen.
I just prefer using the factory nav although it has some weaknesses. The phone screen is too small and it takes too long to focus on it and determine what you are looking at.

The factory nav is updated through a flash drive that the vendor sends to you and is tied to your VIN. Once or twice a year they run a special on the Nav update - regularly $159 for $99.
