Default Second Remote Key

I just bought a 2014 C7 that only had one key. Do I need to get the second key programmed professionally or does the programming process in the owners manual actually work?. I am hearing from key sellers that the 2014 needs professional programming only. Does anyone know for sure?

Am not sure about 2014 but I bought a 2017 that only had 1 key and I used the instructions in the manual to program a second key and it worked for me.

I just spent $17 total on a key for my 2022 Spark. The $17 was for an ebay key including shipping. Ace Hardware copied the key for free. I then followed the instructions in the manual to program it to the car (while sitting at a Chevrolet dealership just in case anything went wrong).

The only challenge is to purchase the correct key. In my case, the SPID label included "XL7", which gave me a clue to which key to purchase on ebay.

Do it your self. Here are the instructions. I highly recommend that you do the long program as that will give you FOB 1 & 2 and both FOBs will have the full memory function as did the original FOBs. If you do the short program, you'll have FOBs 1 & 3 and FOB 3# will not have memory functions.

Use the programming without a recognized fob process Vs the programming with a recognized fob. The more involved process reprograms the car to only recognize the fobs programmed at that time. If you use the recognized fob process that just adds the fob to the recognized fobs, meaning there is at least one fob roaming around the country that can also open and start your car. It also means the new fob will be Fob 3 or greater which might mean it won't be able to access all dash and screen functions.

I have a 2014 that only came with 1 fob as well. I went to a locksmith and I was able to get the fob from them and they programmed it. I think it cost me about 275.00 4 yrs ago.

I didn't pay for mine since it was under warranty but Why is that ridiculous? Parts plus an hour of his time to program it including the delete of old keys doesn't sound that bad. What did you think it would be? It's $100 on ebay which I don't know if it is a genuine GM key.

GM Parts Direct lists it for $107.67 and it doesn't come with the metal key.

Thanks all I ordered a new remote online from a Chevy dealer for $120. Will try and program myself. Call a locksmith if I cant. Should be able to save couple hundred bucks in any event. $400 for a key fob from dealer is ridiculous.

Gee, that looks a lot like what is resident on this forum, but lacking the RED important things to be sure to do.

There are different things to be done for different model years. It is very important to specify the year to get the correct instructions OR YOU CAN LOOK in the Owner's Guide that pertains to the model year. The question is for a 2014 model.

http://forums.corvetteforum.com/c7-g...s-and-rke.html

Also, "4" and "3, Step 1" says counterclockwise to start, seems to me the turn is clockwise but I'm old so I could be wrong.

The layout of those instructions in post #10 seems awkward to me, again, old age could be a factor.

Does that $120 include the metal key?

I would do it in a GM lot if you are going to DIY. That way, if it is FUBAR, you don't have far to go. IDK if the locksmith will program the key or wipe all the keys. The former is easy. The latter is a little more tricky and takes more time. Again, $400 is not a good number or a good number depending on what it includes. Full programming and the metal key and the other fob isn't that bad.

When I got my 2014 C7, that I bought from a dealer, I got two fobs, but one didn't work. I took it back the the dealer and one of their service people got into my car with his iPad and spent considerable time trying to program it to my car. He finally gave up, and they tried another fob that had been with another C7. The dealer then said that the fob had already been programmed, and since it was, they couldn't change it to program it with my car. The dealer, at their expense, finally ordered a brand new fob, using the VIN of my car, and I finally got the problem resolved. You can try to program another fob yourself, but good luck!

This is why I didn't think $400 was that bad since it can be frustrating when it does not work when it includes the fob and programming.

If the FOB is the correct part number for your car AND the FOB is a fully functioning device, that FOB can be paired to the car.

If you have a 2014 C7 automatic, convertible, I could give you one of my FOBs (2014, Automatic convertible) and you could pair the FOB I gave you to your car and it will work just fine.

All you need is the correct part numbered FOB and you can pair it to your car.

Many thanks for offer Elmer but its a coupe m7. I ordered a new one from dealer online it should be the correct part #. I actually bought a used fob (refurbished) and went through the steps to program. All the steps actually worked but it didn't work to reprogram the fob. I am thinking battery may have been bad or it was bad fob. Will try again with new unit.

There are many threads on here where a used FOB is causing problems and can't be programmed. A new OEM FOB always seems to fix that particular problem.

Ok I bought a new transmitter from waldorf Chevy in MD for $120. I was a little worried because the part# didn't match what I expected. But I followed the instructions for programming in the manual and it worked like charm. Remote is fully functioning. Just have to get the key cut.
