Default Power Steering question

I know there's multiple threads on this subject. For the last few months on and off my "service power steering" light comes on at which point the power steering goes out. Happens randomly, sometimes in a parking lot or traveling down the road at speed. Once I turn the car off and back on its usually fine.

I've read it's most likely in need of a new steering rack which I'm hoping isn't the issue. I've already replaced the battery thinking that may have been the culprit since it was pretty old, but the problem still persists at random.

Could it be the power steering module? That seems relatively inexpensive, but unsure how to tell if that could be causing the issue or if it's something else. I'm not even sure the module is located. I figured it were the rack that the steering would be out all together.

Any insight would be much appreciated.

Is your car a 2017? Some that year had a faulty control unit... a well known problem by now. I flew into Kerbeck's at the time to pic up a new '17 only to have the p/s go out right before I was to leave. Being a new issue at that time they thought it quickly fixable... NOT! Hence, they gave me an identical '18 for the same price, redid all the paperwork, even calling State Farm for me, and sent me on my way. Only later the problem part's commonality across several GM brands came to light. Just one possibility for your car to check... best of luck!

2015.

I checked with the dealer. No bulletins or open recalls.

Good luck. Sure hope that whatever the cause of the power steering issue is, it turns out to be easily fixed and at a reasonable cost.
