Default ✅Windshield Replacement✅Solution

A rock cracked my windshield yesterday. I called the Insurance company and they are getting me a OEM replacement. I notice on the service information they emailed me it is calling for a Rain Sensor Solar Heads Up Display. I understand the heads up, but rain sensor? I am presuming that the shield with Heads up also comes with rain sensor by default. What do you think?

Joe,

That is the correct windshield. I think it is actually a moisture sensor used with the auto defrost / defog if selected.

My OEM replacement windshield was described as: Windshield (W/Third Visor Frit, Rain Sensor, W/HUD)

I really don't know about the rain sensor. However, my experience with OEM replacement windshields is they are just generic windshields from various companies (with the proper features) that GM Service Parts contracts for their inventory. They may or may not come from the same company that supplied the factory and are likely not to have the same markings. The things to check for are visible outside glass distortions and then one in the car check for visual distortions of the outside world as some of the replacement windshields are not the highest quality glass. The last thing to check for is leaks. Make sure you hose down the windshield gaskets for a while and maybe let the car sit out in the rain for a few hours to see if the carpets/seats get wet. Some installers have very real problems getting the seals properly installed and adding black sealer to try and fix the job doesn't work. The windshield has to be replaced using a brand new weather strip if you want to reduce the chance of leaks.

There is a DTC for the sensor, so it does appear to be a humidity sensor:

From service manual:

DTC B018A, B048C, B048F or B1395 Windshield Temperature Sensor/Humidity
Sensor
/Control Module Voltage Reference

The windshield temperature and inside moisture sensor includes the relative humidity sensor,
windshield temperature sensor and humidity sensing element temperature sensor all in one
assembly

Depends on your insurance deductible on glass...

Don't know the full price.

The new windshield also is a rain sensor capable model. You're good.

If you have a Z, the Z actually has a different windshield than other models.. be sure to check GM part number. It's different I personally would only go OEM

When I had mine done a couple years ago, the GM one as a little over $1000. Insurance I had at the time covered a OEM one instead of a cheaper generic one. Insurance covered the entire cost as required by Florida.

And of course a month later I got another chip

^^^ Be sure to check your insurance policy. Some cover most if not all of the cost if the chip obscures the drivers vision.

On the way to the Corvette Expo last week, a semi truck threw a rock into our windshield causing it to crack. I have an appointment for a new OEM replacement windshield in a few days. Insurance will pay for it here in Kentucky.

With progressive I added the glass coverage. It's a $50 deductible.

I have mine replaced 1.5 years ago for a rock chip that cracked. NCM covered a new GM replacement w/HUD. The glass was $1100 and install was $200. 16 Z51 2LT.

So, anyone got the part number for the Windshield (W/Third Visor Frit, Rain Sensor, W/HUD)?

Stingray?

Z?

That would give this thread a very happy ending.

Default ✅Solution ✅

Cultrag lists the same part numbers for Stingray and Z06. The only choice is HUD or no HUD.

Update. I had an appointment with Safelite for replacement. The day of the appointment, they sent me an e mail saying I would owe $1156. I called them and found out they do not bill insurance companies, but that I will have to get reimbursement from my insurance company. I guess that will be OK, but I sure am glad I found out ahead of time.
