It must depend on who your insurance company is. I am taking my wife;s Pilot in this saturday for a new windshield. I called Safelight and they told me that my insurance company will be billed. All I have to bring with me is a copy of my insurance coverage.

You are correct. They said they do not direct bill NCM insurance, which is where my Corvette is insured.

My insurance has a $100 deductible. So if I went with the generic window that is all I would owe. Since I wanted the OEM windshield it costs me $419.82 total. This is the first time I had to pay extra for the OEM with Progressive. Previously in the last 8 years I have had three windshields replaced on Corvettes and never an up charge for OEM.

My experience-
Sometimes the OEM windshields are the same price as aftermarket, in which case I got to choose at no extra cost.
Sometimes the OEM is more expensive, and I had to pay the difference if I wanted OEM. The difference was pretty small for me.
Our insurance is with State Farm in Illinois, if that makes any difference.

Maybe. BTDT with Safelite before on an MB with a rain sensor. It stopped working after the glass change. It defaulted to low speed. Safelite swore that the glass was the same except it didn't have the 3 pointed star so it must be a circuit problem. MB verified that there was no issue with the electronics. Safelite said that he had been doing this for 17 years and never ran into that problem. I made a deal. We replace the glass at my expense if the MB glass doesn't fix the issue and they cover it totally if it does. What do you know. The glass with the 3 point star fixed the problem.
