This has probably been discussed before, but here goes. I have been using the navigation system in the car but have noticed that sometimes it wants to take me on a confusing route. So, of all the nav systems, i.e. Google, Waze, Map Quest and the car system, what is the best for routing?
I use Google maps and Waze in my car's Android Auto app. I usually have Google maps plan a route but display Waze for hazards and speed traps. Pandora music plays in the background. I haven't used Waze to plan a route yet but I need to try it. Maybe I won't use Google anymore. Both display speed traps and hazards but Waze might have better participation from drivers. Nav came with my car when I bought it with 3300 miles used. Never used it.
I had the OEM nav system in my previous 2016 Stingray. I also had the traffic subscription with XM and it worked pretty good. The one thing I liked the most about it was it displayed in the HUD which is cool. My current 2019 GS did not come with nav, so have been using Waze which I really like. It is great that it gives you what's ahead like police, hazards etc. I have Carlinkit wireless Carplay so it fires right up when I start the car. I have also used the Google and Apple nav but like Waze the best. I do miss having it in the HUD, but oh well!
I use a combination of the car's nav system and Waze most of the time. If I'm planning a trip, usually I use Google Maps to search for alternate routes before I leave. It seems like most of them want to have you take the shortest route and not necessarily the best route.
Depending on your year....if you have AA app in the infotainment screen it shows up there. It wont show up on HUD but it will turn down the radio volume when a notice is announced. I think 2016 was when AA was introduced. I may be wrong.
Just got my '17 GS. My '14 Z51 didn't have Apple Car Play. Pleasantly surprised that my Waze is viewable on the larger screen (vs iPhone screen) when I connect my phone and have seen it to be easier to use with alternative road options than Google Maps. I use a radar detector but coming up on police locations in addition to my radar use is a plus with Waze.

I normally use the car's factory NAV system and it works well for me. However, there have been times where either Waze or a separate Garmin Nav unit has worked well.
I prefer the OEM Nav unit. I sent for the most recent update and received it last week. I couldn’t load it no matter how many times I attempted it. I called the update supplier and he said that they get quite a few that won’t upload the updates. I’m waiting for the replacement USB stick.
A couple of weeks ago I drove from Michigan to New York about 850 miles in one day. I was pleasantly surprised at how comfortable the comp seats were in my 2019Z for the distance. I used Google maps and several times it warned me of “a speed check has been reported ahead” and sure enough there was one. Now if it could only route me around the crappy PA roads it would get an A+.
Thanks everyone! It sounds like it comes down to the system that everyone is comfortable with. I have never used CarPlay but I might give it a try this time with Google or Waze, haven't decided yet. One last question, we receive video chats with the grand kids, if I'm on CarPlay and I receive and accept a video chat, will it kick me off of CarPlay?

Yep. A few weeks ago I pulled our fifth wheel from Chicago to MD and the ride through PA included a lot of white knuckle driving. Lots of construction zones with narrow concrete barriers! Of course the stretch in NW Indiana when you are surrounded by 18 wheelers at all times of is no picnic either.
I typically stick with Waze, but Waze isn't as smart about trying to reroute you around accidents or finding ways around heavy traffic as it used to be.
I always have Waze in the background.. Mainly for warnings, Google good for a newer road that may not be on latest GM update. If I am in an unfamiliar area and driving fast.. I like the GM Navigation.. hands free directions on my heads up is great.. so it's situational with me..

Thanks for your post, Hank ... mine will not load, either. I'll give them a call.
I have a 2019 Z51. Bought the 2023 Nav update, installation failed. Now I get a message to insert the usb that has the map and install. I have a 2020 update usb, but it doesn’t recognize it. I was told by GM customer assistance to start the car and shut it off with the door open for 5 minutes. This resets it. Didn’t work, really pissed. They said they have issues with this update. They refunded the money I paid for the update, but I have no Navigation. WTF. Anyone else have this issue or know how to reset the Navigation to factory settings?
