Default Shift boot removal

Purchased a new GM shift boot for my 2017 M7 because the original boot had dried out and just wouldn't come fully back to life after numerous treatments. I've watched all the vid and read many threads on the challenging chrome plastic collar that must be lifted then rotated to lower the boot and remove the ****. After about an hour of trying, I decided to walk away. Given that I am replacing the boot with a new factory one, I am tempted to simply cut the chrome plastic ring with some snips or a Dremel and remove it that way. Before I do that, I thought I'd run this plan by the `forum, especially those who have removed their shift boots or shift *****. What a crazy mounting system, though I can see why it was designed this way. Just has too close tolerance to allow for free movement. Thanks for your advice.

I have removed many of these and the first time you remove it you almost have to 'break it free'. If you can get the boot lifted from it's base it is much easier to twist the ring from underneath. There are flat spots on that ring that allow you to get a wrench on it to help with leverage. You can get this off without cutting it!

From the top you twist the ring counter clockwise, but push upwards on it while you twist and it will also come off easier.

Hope that helps a little.

Here is a pic of the ring from underneath showing those flat spots and the pegs on the inside that lock onto the ****:

Wrap a towel around top of the boot & use a pliers to grip ring at the flat spots shown in the reply above. It'll come right off.

Thanks for the photos and comments. I'll give it another dozen tries. Once off, hoping the set screw isn't the next challenge!. We'll get it off. Thanks again

Thanks devnull for the photos and the explanation. It helps a lot for the general reader to understand what OP is trying to achieve.

Good news is that screw is pretty easy. There is thread lock on it, but I have never had an issue getting it off.

Finally had time to go after this project again. Thanks for the help as I was able to easily remove the shift boot ring with your help. Glad I didn't break it first time around. Really appreciate the wisdom here.
