You need an active OnStar subscription. I have a subscription for reasons I wont go into but I find this app kinda cool. Last weekend my son and I went on a road trip to Cooperstown NY to visit the Baseball HOF and the info it provided for the trip was interesting. In the Smart Driver folder it provides the following; # of Hard Braking, # of Hard Accelerations, # of Late Night Driving, Distance driven for the trip, day week or month, fuel economy, avg speed, and speed over 80 mph in % for the selected time frame. on the way up (Brooklyn to Cooperstown, 270 miles) we traveled over 80 mph for 19% of the time but hey I was just keeping up with traffic (yeah right) With only 10% coming home as it rained most of the time. Even with the stop and go traffic in Manhattan we still got 27mpg going there and 23 mpg coming home in the rain.
With this being said, I wouldn't pay for OnStar for just the app but if you carry OnStar you really should download the app to your phone.
When I bought my C7 I looked at the stats. It claimed I did hard acceleration and hard braking hundreds of times with just normal day-to-day conservative driving. Worthless. I checked online and owners of other GM cars were complaining about the poor stats, too.

If you do a paddle downshift on the A8 or a rev match downshift with the manual, it will more than likely show “hard acceleration” because the throttle opened up enough.

Our experience exactly. When we bought our 2017 new, the dealer activated all those features. After a couple of months I looked at my stats and was horrified. Even though I was being very easy on the new car, any insurance company that saw all my "excessive acceleration", "hard barking", etc events; would cancel me in a heartbeat.
It took some effort and several phone calls on my part to get the system deactivated and then get the data deleted. Or they said they deleted it...
