Hi everyone, I’ve had my 17 GS C7 since May and have been used to the noisy drivetrain. Yes, I know it’s a DI high performance engine. I do have an extended warranty until April of next year and I will need to store it for winter soon here in Denver. I notice some ticking going on at idle as well as in the car when I’m cruising under light throttle. I know direct injection cars have a trademark ticking noise due to the injectors and also attributed to the high pressure fuel pump.
just want to get others’ opinion on if my C7 sounds just about like the rest of them out there. I’m mainly concerned about a lifter or two possibly beginning to fail. I’ll add that the car drives great! And doesn’t seem to be pulling power anywhere. I did take it into a local Chevy dealer earlier this year and they didn’t find anything wrong with it but I did not tell them to take a look at the ticking noises in particular. Debating if I should have another dealer also look at the car before I store it for winter cause when I take it out again in the spring it might be right around when warranty expires.
please take a listen to the attached videos and let me know if it sounds normal. car has a little under 38k miles and I’ve put about 2k in it since I’ve gotten it. … Thanks!!
I listened to the first and last - didn't hear anything abnormal. The rear end will "howl" some if it's not full of gear oil. There's been some talk about factory fills of rear ends not being filled completely leading to premature failure. Gear oil's not all that expensive. Might be worth it to do a drain and re-fill just for the peace of mind.
The engine "ticks", it's a combination of direct injection (noisy by nature) and a fuel return check valve on the drivers side that can get a bit noisy but does not pose any real problem. There is driveline noise. No way around that. You are sitting in a plastic tub that acts like a speaker enclosure. The trans and rear end are a bit noisy (in mine) until warmed up. Then all is good (but still noisier than a "regular" car). It aint a Lexus! Check, top up, or replace all driveline fluids... by this time they are likely due anyway... for peace of mind and to know for sure what is in there and how much. Another common noisemaker is the belt tensioner. All the magic fluid bleeds out of it and you can get a syncronous rattle from it. It will do this regardless of use or mileage. May just have been a crap batch or something that took a year or two of production to work through. Your car sounds well within the range of "normal" given the nature of the beast.

Don’t really hear anything out of the ordinary, but if you want to be sure, get a second opinion from another dealer. Can’t hurt especially with the warranty coming to an end.
OP.
FWIW.
On my 2016, C7.R , A8, vert with 8500 miles, I had this work performed recently by a superb Vette tech.
- Triple flush tranny with M1 fluid, blue label. No shudder.
-Changed diff oil. Somewhat loud and low factory fill.
-Coolant flush with 60% distilled water and 40% Dex Cool.
-Flush brake fluid with DOT 3. No issues.
-Replaced leaking belt tensioner # 12686272 under Chev warranty. $123
-Replaced both serp belts-Gates Green # K080852HD and # DK060650. No issues.
-Mag shock update.
-I keep 1 bottle of Techron in each full tank at all times .
All this is probably overkill but that's my strategy.
YMMV.
Your video sounds normal but oil is cheap, parts are expensive.
Sounds just like my lovely 2019 GS sewing machine. It's unfortunate that some of us get the DI tick and some of us don't. Nothing out of the norm, but does make her sound a bit cheap. I've been driving her that way since I got her in 2021. No issues, goes like a bat outta hell!
