I use the Google maps on my phone if the GM system cannot find the location. We do the same in my wife's SUV but it does have the Apple and Android play, but not the Corvette as it is a 2015.
If the existing update to my ancient system fails to find the location I seek, I use Google Maps or Waze or whatever I bring up on my NAV screen from my apple car play.
I like the factory Nav because it projects onto the HUD of our 2017 and mutes the music when giving voice directions.
But updates are a problem. We did the 2024 update for our car when it came out last year and everything worked just like it should. But shortly later, other people started complaining that the update wouldn't install properly on their car and eventually scrambled the Nav system. AFAIK, none of those folks have been able to fix that problem or to get a proper 2024 update.
The C7 has been out of production for 5 years now and I don't think they will bother to make any more updates, especially since they also have to fix the scrambling problem. If they come out with an update that is supposed to fix the scramble? My understanding is that those people whose Nav were scrambled by the bad update have received no help from GM or Hear (the Nav update people).
Bummer.
The thumb drive updates for the C7 are coded to your VIN, so you can't buy one off of ebay or borrow from your buddy.
Any map system that requires installing an update from outside (CD, thumb drive, etc) will always be somewhat out of date when you install it because of the time lag in somebody gathering the info, building the update, and then sending it to you. OTOH, I've personally had some wildly inaccurate map data from Waze and Googlemaps, so nothing is perfect.
We've used map updates that were easily 5 years out of date in one of our other cars and they worked well for us, just pay a little attention to the highway signs.
Lots of choices, none of them are perfect.

I’m always using waze, but in a pinch if you have to. Call onstar they will assist you, and bill you appropriately. Use them, then cancel. Just saying.

What Gearhead Jim says is right - there were problems with the latest update so the update was terminated - supposedly until the problem can be fixed. Will that actually happen - who knows.
I have no intention to use that outdated low resolution screen.
1. How much resolution would you need? I have used Googlemaps on the screen and it isn't that bad for what it is. Remember, your car is obsolete even with the first year of the series since it was planned way back when.
2. What size screen do you have that is as large as the car short of maybe a RV version of Garmin's offering?
3. Are you going to stick it where the screen is? I really don't like to look down and the screen position is pretty good. By law, In WI anyway, you cannot have anything that will obstruct the windshield. So no GPS on the dash or glass, no sunglasses hanging on the mirror or dashcams. Now whether a cop will harass you or not is a different story. I got a couple of verbal warnings till I stopped it including a handicapped tag on the mirror. A mouthy associate got a ticket because he opened his trap to the cop. I hope he learns to restrict his answers to "Yes, Sir." and "No, Sir." in future.

I will be updating my 2016 so I can use Android Auto or Waze.

A very nice feature but I can't see paying for something that won't last or is not in real time.
I agree. Probably no fix coming or update.
Yes I can use maps that are outdated for the countryside but in large cities, things change daily so if it is 5 years old, probably pass and use google maps.

OnStar is not available on my 2014 anymore. It was terminated when the 2G system was removed from service. Thus, my use of google maps and waze or whatever is available on my carplay.

The last couple of updates were in real time. I was lucky, the last update took about three times to download and it worked and it is in real time.
I wast at a Judging Meet in Orange County and had to come back to Ventura County on Saturday. It gave me the same traffic conditions as WAZE, and sometimes, better alternative road routes.
Well, that sux. My last NAV update was the 2021 version, so today I went to look to see about an update for my 2019 Z06 NAV and saw the BS message that no updates are available. I don't have unlimited data, so googlemaps and waze are not viable options. From reading this thread, the 2024 version bricked a lot of NAV screens with GM not caring a hoot. Leave it to GM to obsolete the nav system on a car I bought only 5 years ago. (Yes I know, the maps are outdated before you even load them, still it would be nice to have something more up to date since I paid good money for the in vehicle performance data recorder & nav system option $1795). Sorry for the rant.
"Sorry for the rant."
If enough people would rant in the right places, it's just possible that GM would get their act together and provide proper support to owners.
We still have a 2011 Toyota with the disc-based system, when the final update came out years ago it was made very clear in advance that this would be the last update. GM of course just trashes your system and then ghosts everyone. Without asking, we also got a letter from Toyota extending the warranty on the dash for something like another 7 years because a few cars that no one had heard of experienced some delamination; contrast that with the GM response to owners with a delaminating 3LT dash. People wonder why we ditched GM several decades ago for our family cars?
Not all of the 2024 updates caused problems, we updated our 2017 each year when the new maps came out and all of them have been fine including 2024. So maybe they'll start making working updates again for a year or two.
The disc on our 2011 Toyota is from around 2018, so it's 6 years out of date but is still very useful. As you said, they're out of date before you can install them.
To whom would we talk to at GM? There was no warning at all about a last update. I wondered why I had not received an email about map updates for a couple of years now. I did not know GM basically told C7 owners to stuff it and buy a C8 if you want NAV updates. Then again, GM has a long history of ignoring its customers. At least they made it clear 2019 was the last year for the manual transmission.
Get a better phone plan and use google maps. We also have limited data, I believe 5 megs or gigs or whatever. We have only had a problem w/ data caps a few times in last 6-7 years. Each time I paid $10 or $15 and bought another gig(?). We use nav for a few local things but, when on the interstate, we run nav from when we get on the road to when we arrive at our destination. Both my wife and I have had several instances where nav said to use a detour. Once my detour ended and as I was going up the onramp to the interstate I Iooked back, the accident was just before the bridge I had gone under before the ramp. So nav put me back on the interstate something like 1/4mile after the stoppage. Google maps is just too dang good to not use it.
I understand everyone says just use your phone or a service, but if someone wants to update the map in their car they want to update the map.
I don't get why people bring up phones, everyone KNOWS you can use your phone, either mounting it or via Android Auto or Apple Car Play. If someone is talking about the built in nav lets keep it to that, the amount of arm chair experts who want to share how they use their phone for navigation is ridiculous.
Truth be told, I keep the cars navigation system not for navigation, but to have a quick, easy to reference map on hand. My argument to everyone would be, learn where you are going, know the roads, look at a map (or google) before you do, with street view and a decent memory there is no need to ever program anything into your navigation. See how annoying that is when you get advice you don't want.
I had the GM Nav in my 2016 Stingray but not in my current 2019 Grand Sport. And honestly, I don't miss it. Wasn't that good of a system. Using Waze is way better. Not only for the realtime traffic but alerts like police. BUT, as others mentioned, having the nav in the HUD was cool!
Funny, the nav system in my 2023 Kia Stinger is actually really good (way better than the GM one). I typically use it for local trips. But for driving any distance, I switch over to Waze.
