tl;dr - the last update would brick the system, and nothing has been fixed/created in more than a year

Since we bought our 2017 new, I would grit my teeth and buy the hideously overpriced update each year. Partly because I wanted the latest maps available, and partly because I knew that someday they would stop making/selling updates, without giving any warning.
We bought the 2024 update last fall, it loaded normally and the system has continued to run perfectly. As you mentioned, some people had their Nav bricked by the 2024 update and nobody cares. I too would be very hesitant to get an update unless there was some guarantee it would be ok in my car.

I like Garmin too, and Waze.
But they don't project turn directions in the HUD, they don't mute the music when giving directions, they don't automatically start when I start the engine, etc.
If there was a perfect Nav system, everyone would be using it. Right now, each of us has to pick the combination of good and bad features which work best for us.
Some day, the maps in the factory nav will be old enough that they will be functionally obsolete. I used 7 year old maps in another car and they worked surprisingly well, so the factory nav isn't dead yet. But it will be some day. Bummer.
