When I got home from work today and got out of the car, I noticed a crack in the windshield of my 2016 Z51. I'm sure it wasn't there on Sunday -- I washed the car and absolutely would have noticed. Today was the first time I drove the car since then. The crack is about 14 inches long and clearly seems to have started from what looks like a very small impact about 2/3 along its length (picture below if I can make that happen).
Two questions:
1. Has anybody ever had a crack like this repaired? I've heard of such things but have no idea if it's an actual possibility. If so, I'd like to hear about your experiences and, if it's possible, any recommendations on the west side of Houston.
2. Assuming I have to have the windshield replaced, how much is that going to cost me and how long will it take?
It looks like I have succeeded in getting the pic up:
I believe that's too big to repair, but I'm not glass expert. They usually ask if it's longer than a dollar and if it is, replace.
With that said, I had mine replaced earlier this year, however my insurance covered it. I did NOT get OEM glass. If I did, I would have paid the difference out of pocket. I believe mine was about $900 and OEM would have been around $1200.
I am very happy with my replacement, and I can't tell any difference in the glass. I have a Grand Sport with heads up and PDR, and neither have any issues. I also had the most experienced tech they have in the area as well, so that helped.

Never seen that happen. I have zero idea who would stand behind such a long crack.
Check with your insurance on cost. 2 hours of work time tops.
I used Safelite. ~$700 out the door for a HUD compatible windshield. OEM glass would have been over $2k
First photo is the OEM windshield peppered with chips and it was cracked in a few places. Bottom is the new glass. Zero issues, absolutely clear, not distorted, and works with the HUD
Non-repairable, as stated. Cost and time involved are too variable to try and guess. For example, do you have HUD? If so, another issue, if not you can use whatever windshield they can source the quickest. All the best, in any event.
My GS crack was about the same, no issue with ins but they usually won't pay for OEM. I opted for it as the upchage was 260, but in SC they don't allow ins Co's to charge the deductible on glass, mine was 100 that I expected to pay so I figured only 160 for OEM. Ha. Ask around for glass shops and techs experienced with C7's and they'll probably ask you to bring it to the shop instead of your driveway. You'll want it done right.
Several years ago on our C6, we had the HUD windshield replaced at about 80k miles because the pockmarks were degrading vision when driving toward the sun.
I told the glass shop I would pay the difference between OEM and whatever they normally use, they called back and said same price, no extra for OEM.
We also have $0 deductible on our Comprehensive insurance, the additional premium is so small that I come out ahead if we replace a W/S every 15 years, not to mention the other things that Comp can cover.
This is with State Farm in Illinois.
I would certainly check with the glass company first. A couple of years ago, I reported a possible hail damage based on what someone saw from the hail that came. Their inspector came and didn't find anything. Guess what, when I went to find another company, I found that the company I was with tagged me as having an "event". I had to get a letter of experience to prove I didn't get any money. Bottom line, see how much it costs and how much your deductible is before deciding which direction to go.
I had a similar crack a few years ago. I have American modern Insurance through the NCM at it was replaced with OEM glass with zero deductible. It was done by a mobile glass repair guy. Only took a couple hours.
Check with your insurance company...
See my many posts about windshield replacement in this thread
It will dispel all the internet rumors you hear about, especially about OEM verses OE suppliers.......( I have 30 years of experience in the business )
A quick note of thanks to the forum. I've been driving for 51 years -- some of those years, driving a LOT -- and never had to replace a windshield. I got mine replaced with just the process described here and the costs were pretty much perfectly in line with what were mentioned here. I was only out of pocket a $500 deductible (lower than my general deductible -- there's a special amount for windshields on my Allstate policy that I generally keep a higher deductible on).
