If you tested one you'd see how little spring pressure is used. Also, the face is curved so there's little contact. It's completely a non-issue. FAR better than something inside jamming the screen! IMHO

I received the guard. In fact, it arrived Saturday instead of Monday. Installation was easy. I had to read the included instructions to make sure I placed the included clips in correctly. Their purpose is to keep the bin snug.
I don't have the shelf, but the instructions state which piece is to be installed first (can't remember which one).

No chance. I've never used the thing in over 7-years, and hence, I've never had any of the reported problems with mine. 
(f there were an easy alternative way to get into it in a pinch... maybe; but, I clearly don't need it).
