Just acquired a 2019 GS with an August 2019 build date. Tsb shows cars with build date after 2/19 have updated tranny fluid. My cars A8 is smooth as silk so far. Do you really need a Deactivation device like the Range device. Any thoughts on this before I drop 200 on the device.

Has to do with the transmission build date. Hopefully you have the improved transmission fluid.

I used to think so based on what a speed shop suggested I do if I didn't want to change the cam and lifers. Then came the argument about "exercising it once in a while" or leaving it permanent (which you can't if you have emissions testing) . Way I see it, the THEORY is that it is done in the HOPE of prolonging the life of the lifters since nothing really has been proven, as yet. I don't trust the clone ones since the best anyone can say is "I put it on and no problems". Range had an issue that they fixed in the firmware so it wouldn't drain your battery like the previous generations. What other issues lurk with the cheap ones and what recourse you have? Who knows. I got the Range one and didn't like what it did so I sold it off at a loss and got the Diablo.
Today, IF I were to do it again, probably leave it alone or get the Diablo with a program to increase the throttle tip in and maybe add a little performance while I am at it. At least with the Diablo, I don't have to mess around with a throttle controller to fool the ECM since I have a better programmed throttle tip in.
OP - The Range device does exactly what it says - engine stays in V8 mode all the time. I previously used one on my 19 GS and saw a 2 mpg lose in mileage over approx. a 1K miles of use. I decided the loss of mileage was not worth it to me, so I sold the Range device. I now have 57K miles on my 19 and do not mind it when the engine drops into V4 mode (I do not notice it the vast majority of the time). I accept the idea that my lifters may grenade at some point, but I could drop dead tomorrow too. Good luck with your 19.

And here comes the indignation of "I didn't buy a Corvette to go into V4 mode." or "You should have bought a Prius.".
I saw the $200 “Range” device version on Amazon. Then I saw a $50 version of a “Disabler“ and bought that instead. No issues, no complaints. Does exactly what it says.
Don’t see the need to spend $200 on something that’s not worth $200. Paying more for something doesn’t mean it’s better.

The previous version would drain the battery. The current version doesn't or at least, it's a lot less. If I fly in late one night and try to start the car, I might wish I had the "better" version.

I heard about the battery draining situation. Mine is a very recent purchase and I do keep an eye on it and have a tender so shouldn’t have any issues down the road.
Mine has a little LED light that seems to always remain on. When the car is running, there are two lights. That could be the drainage problem right there. Letting it go too long in between driving it or putting it on a tender. I never let mine go more than a week without doing at least something with it. If the weather is good, I’ll drive it. If it’s winter, I’ll plug it in.

I just left mine for 2 weeks at the airport and I'm pretty sure the structure didn't have any outlets. I'd rather have the Diablo tune it so that I don't have to worry about keeping an eye on it. I can't say for sure but I don't believe it is on a tender between Dec 1 and Mar 31. I think they rotate and just top up the battery since it always has the windows indexed the same way and set and radio settings when it is in storage.
