Performance would buy
Smaller Motor -- 350 hp. But still V8 just for sound
Less race emphasis electronic - reg hud, car vitals
cruising suspension and tire options
more interior comforts, radios, seats,
Most of these cars will never see a track, all out speed, ripping them
to the limit.
If look back to older vettes, they had motor choices, suspension more
touring oriented.
Have the other models too for the boy wanna be racers.
The C5 had all the power needed

I think his point is, he would take all these "downgrades" to pay considerably less.
I further think his point is, in the 60's and 70's there was up to 6 engine choices I believe, so if you just want a two seat cruising car that looks good, a good v8 sound and nothing to crazy under the hood, he, and really many people would like that.
Lets be honest, 80% (im guessing, but I think im right) of these cars will never see any kind of track with the original owner.

This is beyond true. I had a ton of fun in my 1987 Convertible with a whopping 245 HP.
In a not too related subject... Sea Doo just came out with a model called the Spark. They rolled the price, size, and power back to the mid 90's.
Guess what, it's selling like crazy and will continue to do so.
If you apply that logic to Corvette and you could get a brand new and modernized C4 for 35 grand...
