Hi, I thought I read somewhere that there is a specific thumb drive to use for music. I just finished putting all my cd's in itunes and then to my ipod, but I would just like to use a thumb drive; I'm looking ahead for a 2015 but I also want a back-up for my itunes now. Of course, this thumb drive might be obsolete in next years StingRay but it will still be good for my laptop back-up. Thanks

There's no specific type of thumb drive. As long as the USB thumb drive does not have a "read-only" switch (if so, turn it off), and the music is in a file format that can be read by the car, then you'll be fine.
The C7's dash unit will play MP3 for sure, and it may also play AAC and M4A. However, lossless codecs such as FLAC, M4A lossless, etc. are not playable (as expected, of course).
I suggest buying a SanDisk Cruzer Fit, as they're essentially invisible when installed (only a few mm tall when plugged in). Cheap - 16GB is less than $10.

I'm really not a computer-type person, so you are talking in a foreign language to me. I looked it up and someone said to use a Fat32 or ntfs file format, whatever that is. So what is the file format of the C7? What size thumbdrive do I need for 410 hours of music plus room for later additions? I sure wish it had a CD player, LOL.

If you stick with MP3s, you should not have an issue. FAT32 will be the preferred format choice.

Yes, you can use the Apple to USB adapter and plug it in. It will recognize and playback from the iPod.
It will also use SD cards, I've got lots of 4 & 8 GB cards laying around that I used to use for photography but now that 32's and 64's are relatively cheap I've switched my cameras to those...
I appreciate all the input, so how many thumb drives would I need?
No problem!
You could use 3 or 4 64GB USB sticks, or use 2 128GB USB sticks. Even with those large sizes, make sure to have them formatted in FAT32. exFAT and NTFS will not work correctly. This isn't hard, and most will come pre-formatted as FAT32.

Thanks, this is really great info for me. I would rather just have 2 drives, so which of the 128GB would you recommend, because the only difference that I see, is the cost. AND how do I know they are formatted to Fat32 and if not, how do I get them formatted to Fat32? I appreciate your help.
USB 3.0 is backwards compatible with USB 2.0. You will be able to visually identify a USB 3.0 port by color - 3.0 is blue, 2.0 is white or black.
In all my years in IT, I don't think I've seen a USB stick ship with NTFS (for obvious reasons - MacOS, etc). Once you get them, if you need formatting instructions, let me know and I'll walk you through it.

This stuff is soooo complicated, just to play music. I'm looking at my laptop which has 3 usb ports but they are not colored. Also the above drive from Walmart can hold 36000 songs, I only have about 10000, so why would I need two of them. I would like to buy a thumb drive tis weekend but I still don't know what to buy. I'm wondering also if this would be compatible with a 2015 vette? Who knows. Thanks for your help.
