Once you get the tie down bolt out, and the small cover removed, what else holds the big panel in place... Are there clips and if so, how many?
I was trying to determine if removing the side panel would make it any easier to fold the carpet back to get to the battery.

If thats all you're trying to do then no, it would not make it that much easier. Just pull up on the carpet more. To answer your question though, off the top of my head, there are 8 or 9 clips that you need to pry off after removal of the tie-down screw to get that panel off. Get some trim tools and start at the forward corner and work your way along the top and around.

You might be able to get masking tape or painter's tape around the edge of the carpet. I always tape carpet inside the house down when painting the baseboards to keep paint off it.
