If thats all you're trying to do then no, it would not make it that much easier. Just pull up on the carpet more. To answer your question though, off the top of my head, there are 8 or 9 clips that you need to pry off after removal of the tie-down screw to get that panel off. Get some trim tools and start at the forward corner and work your way along the top and around.

The carpet backing is so stiff that it scratches the plastic trim when I try to pull the carpet back.. Looking for a way to protect the trim (maybe cover the edge of the carpet somehow before pulling back)

You might be able to get masking tape or painter's tape around the edge of the carpet. I always tape carpet inside the house down when painting the baseboards to keep paint off it.
